Default Oil filter won't come off.

Dealer oil change last summer. Sold me a filter removal tool (2011 Rocker). It has a cut out in it which I can see no reason for on mine, makes me question if I have the correct tool. It fits....OK, kinda sloppy imho. Anyway filter will not budge. Tool slips when given much torque. Tried tapping around on filter base. No luck. Saw two allen head bolts in filter housing. While shop manual does not mention these, I loosened them to no avail. Hope I didn't just really screw something up. In my past, I would have used a metal strap wrench with a pipe on the handle. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Kranky.......and right at this minute I am.

Good luck. Sounds like the filter was installed too tight or the gasket is stuck to the point that your wrench will not work. In either case it's just a matter of getting it to turn. Those allen screws/plugs are sealing an oil passage and there is no need to remove them or anything else for that matter. If all else fails I've used a large pair of channel lock pliers on other filters (not on my bike though, it's kinda tight in there) or as a last resort pound a large screwdriver through the filter to twist it loose.

I've struggled with removing oil filters too and as a last resort I ended up using a pair of large channel locks to bust it loose. They can be a real pain.

Ah! The screw driver puncture lever trick. Very good idea. I'll take it off that way. Thanks. Yes I've read about the sensor damage. Would someone please explain what a cutout on a tool which is OUTSIDE the oil filter has to do with something inside. I don't see any connection. The oil filter is symmetrical. The cutout does not go on any special orientation.

The cut out is a lame because the tool has a rim all the way around it spins as your loosening the filter.
