Default modifying start button wiring.

Hi all, Im new to this site but not new to bikes. I have a hot start problem with my 02 deuce. It is 95" , 10.5 comp. I want to modify the off run button and start button to allow the start button to spin the engine over with the ignition off. After it is spinning the run button can turn ignition on and fire up. Thanks in advance.

Lance

Thats an old bikers trick. I read about that years ago in one of the Easyriders tech tip manuals they put out. I would say that if your having that big a problem that you need to do this you might want to look at adding compression releases either manual or electric to the motor. Or invest in a higher torque starter.

I understand why you are thinking of doing this but it will disable the safety interlock feature on the bike and make it so if anyone hit the starter button it will activate the starter and could cause a problem down the road. Like moving it forward and dropping it off the side stand.

The start button would only be hot when the key switch is on. This problem is only because of my crane ignition. It fires on the engines first revolution where the stock ign fires after 2 revs. It cant be changed in the programming. I could buy a new ign, but didnt want to spend $350 w/ software.

The ignition may be part of the problem but at 10.5 to 1 compression you should for sure have had compression releases installed. Plus if you are running an agressive cam profile that comes into play also. I won't go over 10 to 1 on an HD motor without adding releases. It's just to much for the stock starters to handle for very long. As always this is my opinion only and they way I set up the bikes I build.

Put a push button solenoid switch. Hit the button with the key off and it'll spin, but with no power to your coil (key off), it won't start. At least it does on mine. I rewired my ignition to put the key in a different spot, but it's wired up essentially the same way as factory.

I had thought about the solenoid route, but thought it might be awkward starting.

It's awkward at first, but after a couple weeks with mine, it was second nature, and now I just reach down and know exactly where it is. It does put your hand close to the hot exhaust pipe, but like I said, it becomes second nature and I never think twice about it anymore.
