There have been several discussions on the topic. Wasn't there something about the "older" ones? I can't remember what the distinguishing cut-off was. I thought I remembered something about the ones with blue LEDs were better (vs red?)...I don't know. Anyway, I've had mine (blue) on for two years without issues.
I have the black gas cap and gauge combo on my night train and they both work perfectly well, though I dont have a tank lift installed and I here thay destroy the accuracy of those gauges
i've got the black flush mounts, work just fine.. gauge is still accurate with a 1.5" tank lift, but the range-o-meter seems to be fudged to heck. either that or my fuel milage is hell
