Default Interesting Morning ride to work

So I had an interesting ride to work this morning. I got started early so there is less traffic to maneuver around on the mean streets of Chicago. I get going and about 3 mile in to my 30mile commute i start hearing this tinging noise. It sounded almost like rocks against sheet metal or nuts and bolts falling. At first I though it was the neck bearing being loose again cause i heard the noise after bumps. This started to upset me cause i had to adjust it after only 2000 miles the first time and now it was less than 1000. Then the noise continued on with no bumps hit and i was now confused. I start looking around as i continue on and there it was my kickstand was just flapping in the breeze. So i move my foot to put it up and WTF it wont stay up. So i ride it until i get to a good spot to pull off, which if anyone has driven on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, in you are south of North ave your options are limited. So I looked like an idiot for another 4 miles with the kick stand flapping around hopping that it doesnt cause me to crash. I get to a good spot to stop and inspect. Yep spring i gone. Now i an thinking how can i get this to stay up so i can 1. get to work 2. get to the dealer to have them fix it. Well good thing i had my bandanna with me and i tied it up to horn, and eventually made it to work.

Now the fun part, sweet talking a dealer around me to fix on my lunch break while i wait. Better yet have them do i while i wait and not pay for it cause it is still under warranty and **** like this should not break.

So sorry for the long rant. But the lesson of the day always have your bandanna handy in case of emergency.

Sorry to hear about your kickstand escapades. At least it is an easy, and relatively cheap, fix. If we had to carry around every part that could fail while we ride, we would need a support truck to hold them all. A bandana and duct tape are both great things to have!

In retrospect, did you have any signs that it was failing (or had you recently worked on it)?

How the heck did you hold the bike up while you tied it off with the bandana?

This, my friends, is the question of the day.

tie it around the loop on the stand or to the jiffy stand while it is holding the bike up. then sit on the bike, and pull the jiffy stand up. tie off to horn.

is my guess.

Excellent fix. I carry bungie cords in my saddle bags but I think the bandana idea probably worked as well as anything.

If you were able to tie it up while simultaneously balancing your ride, I would've loved to have a video camera handy!!!

I would have leaned it up against a wall, left it in gear, and quickly try to find something to chalk the front wheel. I've never done it but that's what I would have tried to do. What other choices do you have?

At Antons bar in New Diggings Wis. there is a curb as you pull into the parking lot. One day I saw 3 different baggers bottom out and break the kick-stand spring. I gave my spare to the first one, the other 2 were S.O.L. I always pack a spare.
