So I put a vance & hines big radius exhaust on my slim today,I took it out for a spin and it ran fine so when I got back from a little 5 mile trip I let the bike cool down and pulled a plug and it was a bit white indicating that it's running a bit lean so I'm guessing that I'm gonna need to get a tuner. I did not believe the service department hype about getting a tuner with only an exhaust but I guess its true, so how much can I safely ride my bike in 70 degree weather until the tuner comes in ? Or should I keep it parked until I get one?
the Slim ran fine before and after install, the plugs looked new with a hint of black before and ash white after and has decel popping after install and none before. Heres a pic.
Spend a 100 and solve your problem. That is from experience. Too many will tell you put a tuner on it first thing. It just needs to run a little richer.
I bet they looked the same before you changed the pipes. the O2 sensors will read and the ECM can adjust the mixture to be 14.5-1 to 14.7-1 which is normal. Just ride it. You will get decell popping without a tuner as the stock program will shut off fuel on decell and the fuel thats comes out the pipe will ignite in the pipe causing this. The stock pipes woun't do that do to the restrictive nature of their construction. Basicly less backpressure more popping. A good tuner can get this out with addeing fuel on decell.
