I rode a new 2012 Ultra and it was ok but it was going to be a bunch of money plus it was not the kind of bike that made for cruising around town (just too heavy and bulky) but very nice on the road. I decided to take my '06 Deluxe and see what might be possible to give it a "dual personality". It needed to be able to be "stripped" reasonably quickly down to a Cafe Cruiser but also be "dressed" to make as comfortable a longer distance Touring bike as possible. Since I had done a bunch of work on it to make it "mine" as a town cruiser as well as adding the batwing fairing, I figured I had a good head start.
The first thing I did was swap out the V&H BSS for a set of Samson 4 inch true duals. I added the dB Killer baffles to have some "sound" when I was in Cruiser mode but not overwhelming when in Touring mode. That also included adding the TMax w/ autotune so it was easier to tweak things.
Since I now had much more room on the back for bags, I swapped out the Hog Deluxe (very nice bags BTW) for a set of Boss 42D's which was still in keeping with the Deluxe styling but gave me much more room.
I then needed to think about comfort and more room for my wife so I found a Ultra TourPak and fitted it. It is completely removable via the two-up detachable rack since I already had the mounts on the bike for the Touring Passenger Pillion and Sissy Bar. I removed the antenna mounts form the TourPak and fabricated an aluminum mounting plate to interface between the TourPak and mount.
I have a complete document that shows the transformation w/ pictures but it's too big to attach. PM me if your interested.
I have modes for:
1) Solo Hot Weather Cruising ( no TP, no Sissy Bar, no lowers)
2) Solo Cold Weather Cruising ( no TP, no Sissy Bar, add the lowers)
3) Full on Touring ( add on lowers and TourPak- and the wife is very happy)
4) Mix and match as desired.
Comments and Suggestions Welcomed. D

Well, technically anything can be made removable (re the faring). I used the Kuryakyn fairing which is more or less a "permanent" installation. It can be removed but would take about 20 minutes since you have to remove and remount the Passing lights.
There are several batwing fairings out there that include a quick detach feature thru the use of the HD Quick Detach kit for their windshields. I had one on the bike but elected to use the "K" fairing since i wanted the glove box (very handy & lockable).
Everything else (Engine Guard is an exception) is quick detach enabled (tourpak or sissy bar and the Bags). The Engine Guard is held with only 3 bolts and can be removed and replaced in 5 minutes. You DO NOT have to take the Lowers off the Guard to do so although the bike does have to be "off the ground" for clearance so you can slide the EG and Lowers out the front under the wheel.
Next step is to find some reasonably priced Extended Hard Bags that I can then modify to fit the Boss Bags mounting so you can have a selection as to which bags to use with which configuration......................... If you have a source , please let me know.
So far I like what I've done and it has not been all that expensive since I'm using parts from Forum members picked up via the Classifieds.
This is a great setup and write-up. Really like the duals. Personally, I would have switched to hard bags to keep the theme consistent when in touring mode.
The fairing on my heritage is a quick release reckless fairing. I put a couple extra bolts in the quick detach so someone walking by couldnt just pull it off and steal it.
I'm looking for "hard Bags" now can't find any reasonably priced ones right now. Something will turn up.
The Boss Bags mount has a lip on the bottom to "how up" bags and then two "quick connects" on studs (much like air hose quick connects) so the intent is to find the right bags and fab the mounting to use the same setup.
One thing to keep in mind is that the Bags open up to the top so "clearance" is needed between the bottom of the TP and the top of the bags. That's one reason why some of the HD Hard bags open up (slightly) and then out.
