Guess I'm the lone ranger on this but my fuel gauge works perfectly.

Only if you want a dummy cap that serves no function.....like the fuel gauge.

I don't think the gauge is wired in any way to the dash light.
But it should be easy enough to check, it will just take a bit of time and mileage.
Just ride it around for a couple of days keeping an eye on the gauge and light.
When it gets down to the level where the light comes on put a little gas in the bike.
Just enough to turn the light off.
Now look under the tank where the gauge is and you'll find the connector for it strapped or attached to the tank bottom.
Disconnect it and reset the trip meter to "0".
Take the bike for a ride that's long enough (about 20 or 30 miles or 3/4 of a gallon of gas) to either turn the light on or prove it is somehow dependent on the gauge.
If it doesn't come on, try plugging the gauge back in to see what it does.

My guess is that it they are not in anyway connected as the gauge works directly off the sending unit.
While all of the dash functions, speedo, gear indicator, odometer, security key light and everything else in it is controlled by the ECM under the seat via a serial data line.

You are correct the light signal comes directly from the sender in the tank. You should be able to remove the gauge and still have a low fuel light.

My gauge works well, but my main fuel indicator is my trip meter. 160 I am looking for gas!

trip meter...can't go wrong...

although, i've tested the trip meter about 3 months ago:

- cruise control at 75mph on I-81 S, near Harrisonburg, VA
- started sputtering then engine just dies, watched rpm needle drop to ZERO
- turned signal to pull over
- leaned bike over slightly to help slosh fuel
- got it started and luckily enough near exit
- dies again halfway through exit ramp
- leaned bike again to help slosh fuel
- made it to gas station

- pumped 5.7 gal, range of 214 miles, that's about 38mpg average (103ci)

- now, my rule of thumb, fuel up every 200 miles max...

- obviously when you don't dog it, fuel efficiency improves...

my $0.02

LMFAO!
Thanks, guys. My gauge is actually pretty accurate, lucky like basscatcher. Just thinking of going with a flush mount set-up. Light comes on reliably at 170-175 miles on trip meter.
