Gauge does not read below 1/4 . It works fine until it hits 1/4 and will not go any lower. Is it sending unit, float or gauge? Oh ya it's an 06 NT FI. Thanks.
If the float is at the bottom. Sending unit should read 240-264 ohms on the Y/W wire to ground . If full should read 27-40 ohms. My guess is your float is sticking. Mine doesn't work exactly right either. It sticks at full sometimes then starts working at 3/4.
Mine never worked worth a damn, even when new, so I just got rid of it all together when I was repainting the bike. It makes for a cleaner look, although you obviously need to remember to fuel up a little more often just to be safe.
The sending units on Harley bikes have a well deserved reputation for inaccuracy.
Most of us who have had a Harley long enough have learned to ignore it and use the trip meter instead.
I learned the hard way on my '05 Heritage while on the highway. I was almost at the next fuel stop and had what seemed to be a few more gallons since the fuel gauge was in the middle of the red line but I wasn't so lucky...its started to sputter and died out about 2 miles from exit.
Probably a thread about this, but is there a way to remove the fuel gauge cap and put a regular screw cap in without jumping through hoops?
I'm afraid not, the gauge is in a hole or tube actually that goes straight through the bottom of the tank.
To put in a screw cap you would have to take the tank off, cut the tube out.
Weld the hole in the bottom closed and weld in the the screw threads from another tank for the new cap.
Then when your all done, get the tank repainted.
So it can be done, but it seems like a lot of work for very little gain to me.
Okay, since the gauge is wired to a light on the dash, if I were to just put in a dummy flush mount, how does that screw up with the light, if at all? I've also seen some flush mounts with just a single light, not an array like the H-D one, does anyone think that is an alternative? Having a hard time justifying $170 for the H-D gauge.
