From what I have read a 150 rear tire is about the largest I can install w/out mods. Can anyone tell me if I can still go 150 and lower the rear 1.5 to 2 inches?
Will any grinding of the fender mounting bolts be necessary on the inside?
The 150 is the max with out any mods. I wouldnt grind the bolts, instead i would use buttonheads with the head inside the fender and acorn nuts outside on the struts.
Thought I saw metzler's site saying something about a 160 working on a stock 150 softail.. so I imagine that would mean stock or lowered.. Can't see why lowering would make a difference, as that tire travels up inside the fender between the strut mounts anyway..
Trick is, if it's a concern feel to see if you've got any strut bolts really protruding past the threads into the fender well.. I'd get that corrected if you do have bolts protruding into your wheel well, with a more correct length of bolt. I really discovered this when installing the studs for the new saddlebags.. I cranked them in just until I could feel the studs breaking past the plane of the threaded bracket.. Then mounted up from there.
I always ran quick disconnect hardware on my struts, so I had special bolts to start with. I elected to use narrow nuts on the inside of the fender and chopped the bolts off with a cut off wheel.
A 150 will fit, a 160 will be tight - be prepared to recenter your wheel though.
Some people have installed a 150 without recentering. It's a crap shoot how these were set up from the factory.
That's a pretty good site.. I especially like your write up on polishing stainless fasteners.. not to change the subject. Chrome bolts just plain suck. Brand new chrome seat mounts.. already a little blip of rust down in the allen slot.
I'm with you.. might be a good spin off thread, but I had a field day in the local Ace that just opened close by.
I think I have to get myself some kind of setup to polish some SS bolts.. No drill press.. Heck, no workbench even currently.. Have a vice, gathering dust on the shelf.. But the drill press looks like THE way to go to polish them up.
chops, nice fattie, what year is it? i checked out your pics on u changing out your rear fender. question is r u running a 150 or is it bigger.
great info on the link too. i have an 01 and trying to decide what to do.
