I have a 2001 nightrain with a Motorcycle innovations "bad boy" oil cooler. It makes it a little hard to fit a wrench on the oil filter but it works great. It has a thermostat in it so it dont open up till 150 degrees. If you ride in cold weather it bypasses and lets the motor warm up to operating temp. No need for a cardboard cover. With the air temp around 80 to 85 driving in town the oil temp runs about 220. On the Hwy it drops to about 180.
In 2009 @ Sturgis it was about 100 degrees on on day and I went down Main street. It took about 20 min to get to the other end, one bike length and stop. If you've been there you know what I mean. Buy the time I cut over to the hwy and stopped @ McDonalds for lunch my oil temp was 275. I headed out of Sturgis and when I stopped in Deadwood the temp was back down to 185.
Oil coolers work, they work better if your moving. They also provide almost an extra qt of oil to circulate to help cool the motor. Im very happy with mine.
