At one point I was considering using red bulbs so I could switch my red lenses to smoked on the rear of my bike. I soon found out that almost no one carries red light bulbs and part of the reason places like auto parts stores didn't is because they are not considered DOT. There was one lone cycle place in my area that did carry red bulbs from Kury but at 11$ a pop (PER bulb) or having to order them online for not much less I decided to just not bother.
Were you able to secure red bulbs in your area? What did it cost for you to replace them?
Custom Dynamics has the best & brightest LEDs available for our bikes. Ideally you want an array rather than a bulb. Even with the smoked lenses they're insanely bright. They even have a life-time warranty ... but, they're not cheap. However if you want to be serious about the best LED lighting for your ride, they probably have an array for your model.
I changed every light on my bike to LEDs. Speedo, dash, license, front fender, signals, brake & headlight. Tail/brake & signals are from Custom Dynamics and they're the best I've ever seen.

For $68.00 for an LED conversion kit, $2.00 for an 1157 standard or $11.00 for a 1157 LED 360. Just replace the bulb, look at the money you'll save as well as the headaches.
For a tail light, go 2357. Works like/constructed like an 1157, but is brighter on the "stop" filament. I have not seen a red 2357, but you could always use colored glass paint. $1 each.
I'm with PanHead on the led light array. Just run down the Alcan with my two brothers and one had the led light and the other had the laydown lens with a 1157. There was night and day difference on the visibility. The 1157 looked like a bic lighter behind the lens when the lights got a bit dirty. You want to be seen in the rear so what's your life worth?
