So I found an awesome set of bars with copper finish that I love 14" for good price but no knurles. Guy says he never has it on bars on his Springer, but I can't afford to buy bars that don't work well. Any thoughts? Retaining all stock hardware.
IMO, there are too many people having issues with apes moving around WITH knurled bars, I would think unknurled bars would just be an invitation for problems. BUT, you can drill and tap the risers for a set screw to help hold them in place, so if you are dead set on those bars, you could set screw them and probably be just fine.
some use pieces of inner tube on non knurled bars.. I'd say just find a set with knurls... if the bars move it could pull out the clutch and pull on the throttle or cause you to go down..
Also watch out for cheap knock off parts on ebay or online, not worth having the bars break from the vibration fatigue while you're going through a turn or at any speed.. crashing sucks..
I say if something is worth doing...It's worth doing right. Don't waste your money on apes without knurls, buy a decent set and powder coat them if you want. Handle bars aren't a good place to cheap out.
You can easily pin the bars. Should be done with longer than stock bars regardless of knurling (read: apes or long pullback beach bars). Once they are pinned, no amount of pulling or whatever will move the bars out of position. My $.02
Drill the riser and into the bars. Tap the riser and the bar. Screw the bolt into the riser and bars. I did it on my Bones and it will not budge. Cost about $2.00. If you like the bars get em and make em work.
