I'm paint my new extended saddle bags. I ordered the paint (Merlot Sunglo) and activator from HD dealer. This color needs a vivid black base code. My question is do I have to use HD's vivid black base code or will this color work and look the same with any black base paint?
If I don't have to spend another $100 on the vivid black paint I can use that toward the actual painting of the bags.
As far as the visual effect goes, any black will give the same effect. Paint compatability is a different story. Some paints are formulated to work only within their brand line, i.e PPG, Sherwin Williams etc. If you mix brands you could get a serious reaction, i.e wrinkles, bubbles etc. If you are going to mix brands the best advice is to do a test piece that is made of the same material that you are painting, let it cure and see what happens. Remember just because you don't get an immediate reaction, there is no guarantee that you wont get one later like paint sluffing or fade out. Best advice, use the complete system that was designed to work together.

+1 on this. I learned this the hard way years ago. It's best to use all the same brand paints for compatibility issues.
