I've heard the Deluxe referred to as HD's "Blank Palette" because of the endless mod possibilities. That's not to suggest the the 'Luxe ain't pretty right out of the box, but if you search through some of the Deluxe threads here on the forum, you'll see some sweet rides. I love mine. Put over 15 K on it in the last year. As for the seat, I went with a Lepera Silhouette solo which put me farther away from the tank. Works perfectly for me. I routinely ride 150 miles at a stretch with no discomfort, though there was a break in period. I've also got beach bars and Sampson True Duels to install this winter and maybe a Shotgun Shock if i can scrape together the dough. I love this bike. Highly recommended!
Wife has a tail bone problem. Switched her 2010 Deluxe seat out for a 2009 Heritage Softail seat. She absolutely loves it. She's ridden 'em all and just loves the softail. I did the same seat switch on mine although I didn't mind the stock seat. Just got back from a 5,530 mile tour from Florida to the Midwest and back. Put an aftermarket batwing fairing on for the trip. Perfect ride! Back home and switched back to the detachable windshield. Also put 1993 Heritage Softail bags on them, Vance and Hines mufflers and a crotch cooler from Captin Itch for the heat that comes up from the rear cylinder and pipes. Wouldn't trade back to a bagger for anything man! These are terrific rides!
The popularity of the deluxe proves that what people really love is the old school nostagic style of what HD used to be. So then they added the slim...good call, people like it...the throwback sporties are cool too. I want to see a swingarm mounted full rear fender with a springer front and a pogo seat, a total vintage model with modern reliabiliy. Regardless Im keeping my Deluxe fo-eva...
I really like the Road king but when I saw my Deluxe on the showroom floor I fell in love with it. Bought it without even test driving it. The biggest issues I had were with the bars. They were much too low for me. I'm 5"10 when sitting still both my feet just rest flat on the ground. The seat does position you slightly forward but it is not an issue for me. I'd love a 2014 CVO Road king but only to sit beside my Deluxe. It will be a cold day in hell before I sell that bike.
