If someone posted this already then sorry for the duplicate. I just didn't have time to read every page.
I don't recall you saying how tall you were. I am 6'1" and one of the first things I did was buy the harley goodies floor board exenders and move the boards out 1 inch on each side. I also bought the extended pans that moved the boards up an inch I think it was. Provided a much better leg position and not so bowlegged around the air cleaner.
I personally could not handle the stock handle bars. They just bent my wrist in such a way that I would get pain. I switched to the 12.5 Wild one apes and have been comfortable ever since.
Mine is an 07 and over time I started to not want studs... so now the Heritage is studless but that is the great thing about the bike. It's so versatile.
I do have a shotgun shock on mine and cannot complain about the ride. Although it's more cosmetic really as the Heritage already rides great out of the box.
I did end up going with a little bigger cam in mine more for some two up power when I wanted to pass a little faster. The 96 is a dog motor for sure but I am not a speed freak so not that big a deal.

My question for those who ride two up is will changing to a passanger touring seat be that much more comfortable for my wife?
I fine my seat to be awesome but my wife is sometime uncomfortable. I would love her to be comfortable and willing to take longer rides.
I love the Rider's seat on my 2007 Heritage.
My wife complained about her but going to sleep/numb after 20 miles or so with the stock passenger pillion, which limited the length of our rides together. Though she does ride with me too often, I went ahead and got the touring passenger seat for her (it's wider and more plush), but then the stock backrest hit her too low on the back so I had to upgrade the passenger backrest also. She is much happier now (when she does ride with me) and is good for 100 - 130 miles ride in a day (wish I could get 200 or more out of her though).
To me it was worth the appx $250 bucks to make her happy.
Here is my Heritage before and then after upgrading both the passenger pillion and backrest (HD parts).

I have been thinking about trading my 10 Wide Glide in for something more comfortable and have really enjoyed reading through this thread. I got hit by a drunk while on duty (totalled my squad) and my lower back has really paid the price. The Wide Glide beats me up terrible now. You guys have some beautiful Heritages and have given me some great ideas. I will admit I am apprehensive to going to a bike with bags and windshield as they appear much bigger than what I've ever owned. I look forward to more posts on this thread. Regards. TM
Tropermike, we went from a '06 Sporty to the Heritage and yes it is a larger bike but the handling was so much better than the Sporty with the lower center of gravity. We tried the Wide Glide and found it to LARGE and bulky than we tried the Heritage and fell in love with it. Another thing about the Heritage, the wife and I both have back problems and the stock ride on the Heritage was good but we went with the Shotgun Shock air suspension system and the difference in the ride is phenomenal. There are some ROUGH train track crossings around our home and the first time we went over them without the SS was an eye opener, Ouch, then after the SS install we went over them again, preparing for the JOLT, and it was NOT there. The Shotgun's just ate it up. Get the Heritage as has been posted earlier this bike is so versatile even in stock form and then with the custom mods you can really make it yours.
Glad I came across this thread. My son & I were at local dealer yesterday, came across a '13 heritage in candy orange & beer bottle, I'm in love. Might trade my '05 RK on one after winter, always loved the Heritage's look. Now gotta decide between the orange & beer bottle or pearl white.
I love my old Heritage. It's a relationship that often boarders on the unnatural. But, apparently on long distance rides it's not that great for my wife. My wife wants me to trade for an Electraglide. I'll probably do that but, I do love my old Heritage. I think I'll probably love an FLHTC too.

That is the approach I have taken. The Ultra is for really long two up days of riding. I like the softail for solo rides or shorter two up days. I have my Heritage on order now. Can not wait for the thing to come in.
