I have a 2004 FXSTSi with a tank dent. I'm not sure if I'll replace
it or fix it. If I replace it, will there be a difference between a
carburated and fuel injected tanks? Will a carburated tank
fit on my bike?
I had a dent fixed when I laid down my old fat bob. Local painter charged me about 400 bucks to fix and repaint it in the original brilliant silver denim. Would have been 50 bucks more if I hadn't pulled the tank myself. A whole lot cheaper then a new tank either way. The dent was about the size of a baseball give or take.
Don't know about your 04 but my 05 parts book list's the same PN for both tanks. Only difference is the Carbed one uses an adapter for the petcock. I would suggest looking at an 04 parts book. My bike has carburetor and the tank I have on it came off of a FI bike. I got it on Ebay pretty cheap $50.00, they are out there if you just take the time to look.
If you wanna get yours fixed and don't want the down time, just buy a cheap used one to use while yours is being repaired.
These guys sell new and used tanks and fenders. They also do dent repair and paint match. I haven't used them, but it might be worth a call. They're in So Cal.
Depends on what year tank. Most of the tanks offered during the period that FI and carb were both available will most likely be the same tank. That said, the years make a difference as well. The early carb/FI tanks differ somewhat from the later carb/FI tanks. So, you'll want to stick as close to your year as possible, and if you can, pull your tank and snap some pics of it top and bottom to compare to whatever you're looking at. IIRC, there were changes made to the tunnel at some point, and there may have been changes to the FI access hole as well. Good luck!
I replaced my tank & kept old tank for wall art. Found new painted tank $400 eBay for my 07. Try to get one for your year like others said. Things change throughout years where your internals mount. Do your homework!
It's a repairable dent, but I have an idea for a paint job
and as long as I was repainting I though I'd get a new tank
and sell the dented one. I haven't had the tank off to see
how it lays out underneath. Looks like I've got a project
this weekend. Thanks again.
