Default Advice Fat boy low or Slim - UP DATE it's a Slim

My buddy is looking for his first new Harley. He is short but he can flat foot the FBL and the Slim. He loves the look of both but the Slim sets lower and is a bit lighter, he likes that.
If any one has drove both dose the Slim handle easier in slow maneuvers and in the curves. He is not interested in high speed runs at all.
He wants to buy within the next 2 weeks but test rides are a problem here in Michigan and it feels like Spring will never come.
Thanks for any info.

I've ridden the fatboy lo and a softail heritage classic. The softail heritage was a little more nimble but not real noticeable. The fatboy lo was solid but took alittle more effort in the turns. The fat tires in the rear and front made it feel really solid and balanced in a straight line and imperfections in the wrong (a lot of that here in Michigan) were hardly noticeable. I picked the heritage because it came with everything I wanted stock but if I can get another bike the fatboy is at the top of my list. I plan to test ride the slim along with the vrod later this spring but as right now the heritage is the closet I've come to how the slim would handle.

i haven't driven a slim but it looks a lot like a fb with cosmetic differences. the difference in ride and handling quality isn't probably much if any at all. 28lbs between the two bike isn't going the be that noticeable when your moving that much weight around anyways. i also think that a little narrower rear tire won't be that much of a difference either. between the two i like the fb better (sorry i own one a little biased). i like the wider rear tire and the solid wheels (easier to clean than spokes even though they are a little ugly). i don't like the rear fender on the slim, it looks unfinished and the handlebars aren't doing for me.

I've test ridden the Slim and didn't like it... felt like a Fatbob.

Love the Fatboy. I did notice after getting mag rims it was a bit lighter to turn... maybe it was just me.

Have your buddy test ride every bike he's remotely interested in before he makes a choice.... might as well be sure, and besides, test riding a bunch of bikes is fun.

Demo rode both at Bike Week in Daytona. I say go with the FB. As far as handling goes, not much of a difference, IMO.

You know where I stand. But I'd say he should give a good demo to both and then see which one picks him.

Whats comfortable and handles well for one person is not always the same for another. Buying a bike is a large expense. I would have to ride both before making a choice. That said I love my Lo and like the way it rides and handles.

Up-Date
Saturday 3/23/13 my buddy bought a red 13 Slim, his first brand new Harley. He got a 18" HD windshield for the cooler Mi days with it. He lives by grand Ledge but got his bike over in Flint.
He is so happy he don't know which way is up. He loved his Sportster but felt it was time to try a Big Twin with a smoother ride. I hope he loves it. First thing he wants to do is move the plate to the bottom center of the rear fender, I may need to ask advice from you guys on that.

I have rode a Fatboy Lo, Fatboy, and the Slim... Hadleing wise no real differeance at all other then windy days with the mag wheels on the Fatboy/Lo.... I bought the Slim. Love it I love the throw back to bobbers of the 40's and 50's. Similar floorbords on both but I wouldn't trade my Slim in for the world!

The Slim is a great blank canvas imo. That has awesome potential for hopper. Fatspokes, hugger tins, apes, etcc...and slammed!
