Are you saying you installed the sprocket can first then the outer can plate then the nut then the spring plate?
The spring plate is only held on by the nut shaft. How did you get it to stay in place?

no, somehow in my confusion/frustration i installed everything as it should be except i put the washer/spacer behind the outer cover instead of on the outside behind the nut of the compensator

Mudhaiser, my I suggest you invest in a factory service manual. Lots of exploded views to avoid stuff like this. Glad to hear you have it figured out......Steve
