Is this a common procedure for most of you out there? Makes perfect sense. I wonder if the HD dealerships do something similar during their recommended mileage services.

Some dealers actually do, but most don't. You have to ask.

Good Link.

Everyone seems to recommend synthetic.

In the link he states that Amsoil and Mobil1 seem to be the best. He also states that the non-vtwin Mobil1 (for cars) is just as good if not better but cheaper.

Would that be 10w-40 vs 20w-50? Thoughts?

non-vtwin Mobil1 (for cars) come in 15-50, sure the 20-50 V-Twin would also fall in the 15-50 tolerance range. The main difference as I understand it is Moble 1 says on there web site it has additives better suited and allowed in the MotorCycle rating it has and is not allowed in their rating for the typical rating on their car oil. I run the 15-50 but I do not need mine to last forever nor do I have a warranty concern

Kind of have to double this. That thing you think is the drain plug is not. Its on the right side of teh frame to the back. Good luck.
