The final 1k miles of riding last summer my rear wheel started throwing grease all over the right side of my rear wheel, all over my WWW's. I am assuming that the sealed bearings are no longer sealed and throwing it's grease. 1st, what would cause that bearing to go like that, they only have 6k miles on them and I do not beat my bike into the ground when I ride it either. 2nd, is there a better bearing out there to replace the stock bearing's? 3rd, should I replace both sides on both wheel's? If that one went I question it's quality and if that one went, what kind of shape are the others in? Lastly, if that bearing is throwing grease is there a possibility I have damage to other parts on the wheel like the axle or anything else? Thanks for all input.
Sure they are not after market already. Mine are still good at 40K and I just sold a rear off a fat boy that had 100K and it was fine. Does your 06 have the 25MM single row bearing?
Most bearings that I know are sold in pairs. I would replace both. I know that 08 and later models are notorious for having early failures with the factory bearings.
I am not 100% sure but I am 99.99% sure they are stock. The guy I got the bike from did nothing to the stock wheel set up's and I have not touched them either. The bike only has 6k so I don't know why he would have changed them. The bike only had 4k on it when I bought it. So, they have to be replaced, what brand do I want to start considering and reading up on? Suggestion's? With what I have already read so far from you guy's, I doubt I will go with stock bearings. Why pull junk out and put junk back in?
I'd pull the wheel and replace both bearings. Go aftermarket. There are plenty of good bearings available. While its apart check to make sure the PO didn't leave out any spacers, etc. I'd pull the front and replace those too. I highly doubt anything else is damaged. As others have mentioned, some of the factory sealed WBs for a couple years were are junk.
Mine went out at 8k on my 08 crossbones i replaced them with stock ones and im at 20 k now. Be prepared for a huge pain in the *** when getting the axle out. You may have to replace it also.
Hey all
@tbone - yes, the stock wheel bearings on your '08 were junk. That part was superseceded with the same part number thats in my '10 FLHX. I have 17k on and no problems, nor have I seen any with the supersceded wheel bearings have any issues come through the shop.
@tenspeed - We like to utliize the 'ole rubber swing press to get the axles out, because they are tight. Be sure to apply anti sieze to the axle to ensure future repairs go smoothly
