I just converted my Fatboy to FX forwards, and I don't see how you could keep the boards. The main part of the swap is the brackets that hold either the boards or pegs, and of course the shift and brake levers are a bit different.

I have converted a couple bikes from floorboards to forwards and like Redbeard said, you can not have both. No pictures handy but its been done more than once. Its mostly Fat Boy guys that seem to do it, but google images had a few other FL bikes with forwards. I just ran a quick search though.

edit: Its maybe an hour or so job. Simple hand tools.

It's very straightforward. Took me a while because I stripped two of the Torx bolts that mount to the frame. Keep in mind you have to disconnect the rear brake master cylinder to swap it over to the new bracket, which means flushing the brake fluid. But it's nothing difficult, especially with a Mityvac. Plus you have to buy pegs and a brake pedal pad.

Thinking about it, I get it that you cant keep the boards,
I have highway pegs on my crashbar and at each and every opportunity I get the ***** of my feet up on them but keep my heels on the boards.
reason I'm thinking of forwards is that I might go with hydraulic foot clutch.
Wondering how different it is riding with forwards to the way I ride with my feet on highways.

Thinking about what you want you might have this as an option. This is a pic of the floorboards on my Dyna. I had forward controls on that bike and used this type of aftermarket floorboards. They mount to the clevis on the forward controls and are fairly adjustable. You CAN NOT get them back to the position that factory boards are, but they give you a similar feel. To answer the position question, for me I guess that forward controls would be kind of in the middle of where highway peg and traditional FL floorboards would be. If that helps.

another thing to consider before swapping..... I had forward controls on my fatboy and had removed the boards. its' only 3 torque bolts that mount the boards to the frame, swap the rear master cylinder out and flush and reconnecting the shift linkage. Overall not a hard job if you have the right tools. But what you aren't considering is that almost all forward controls mount flush to the frame and do NOT have the extra bolt slot for highway/crash bars. If you have them, you're most likely going to have to remove those as well in order to run forward controls.
