Default Lowering my Deuce and Part # SRES24

I'm planning on lowering the rear end of my Deuce. In my service manual it says i need "Part No. SRES24" to gain access to the shock bolt. I haven't seen anyone who has lowered their bike say anything about this tool which costs $45. What did you use instead of this tool? I'm thinking this just another way to suck every dollar we have out of us.

Thanks

No, you don't need an special wrench to get the shocks off and lower the bike. It will help a great deal if you can jack the bike up on a lift that leaves the front mounts exposed.

At any rate for the backs just put a three-quarters inch box on it and put your foot on it, after the locktite breaks you can remove them the rest of the way with your fingers - same thing for the front.

If you are sticking in lowering studs and making up your own jig to take the shocks apart be careful. Strong springs can be dangerous. Having said that I can tell you that I made up the jig out of 2x4sand my hydraulic jack in about 15 minutes - just about the time it take to install the lowering studs in each shock once you get the hang of it. I got my studs off of E-Bay, they ran me twenty bucks. I dropped it two inches at first, then brought it back up an inch. It just felt better down-one than -two to me, it might to you too.

Studs are nice in that they give you a chance to re-zero your adjuster plate and make your initial adjustment based on actual distance between the plates rather than counting threads.

kong,
Thanks for the reply. I didn't think I needed the special tool but I just wanted to make sure. Now I'll have to figure how to jack the bike up and leave the front mounts exposed. I have a buddy who works at Sears and I think I'll get that aluminum jack at an employees discount. I hope that will allow me to get those shocks off. I'll go to a local machine shop and have them compress the shocks and install the studs.

Thanks again,

da boogieman

Thing is, without the tool, you can't properly torque the rear mount bolts.... but I didn't bother. To me, for that specific nut, "Tight's right".

Manual says torque the bolt and washer to 121-136 ft-lbs and to add blue loctite. the blue loctite should hold it on.
