In my service manual it says i need "Part No. SRES24" to gain access to shock bolt. I haven't seen anyone who has lowered their bike say anything about this tool which costs $45. What did you use instead of this tool? I'm thinking this just another way to suck every dollar we have out of us.
No, you don't need any special wrench, but you do need to lift the bike. You can easily get a box wrench on the bolts on each side (little tighter on the right) and then get yourfoot on it to breake it loose from the locktite. After that they come off by fingers. Front nuts are pretty much the same. I use a Sears red jack and I don't have any problem at all getting to my shock bolts.
The actual lowering is pretty easy too. Just be careful with whatever jig you end up using to compress the spring. A 4" section of inch and a quarter water pipe is necessary along with about 4 inches of press travel as well.
