Default Softail Slim: Fill 'er up!!!!

Or maybe not....

One or two things I've noticed when fuelling up.

  1. It's really easy to get 'blowback' when putting the nozzle through the filler hole.
  2. It's quite difficult to get a 'full' reading on the petrol guage. Maybe due to parallax error, or (as I suspect) the balance pipe under the front of the tank takes a while to flow through & equalise both sides.
  3. The 'range' reading on the trip display reads around 200 miles on a 'full' tank but about 100 miles when the gauge shows 1/3 full.
So, should I trust the gauge, or the range display?

Has anyone run their tank dry and found out which one was telling the truth?

The Sportster was sooo much easier. Reserve - 18 miles - dead.. Simple!!!

HD fuel gauges seem to be hit and miss. Some seem to work great. Some, like mine, are not anywhere near accurate. I covered mine up and only go by the trip meter. As for blowback, I found a plastic vitamin bottle that screws into the fill hole perfectly and cut the bottom out. Screw it in and the bottle catches all the splashes.

I just shove the nozzle in completely and squeeze until it shuts off then pull it out and half squeeze while looking in so i know when to stop.

You know with some vehicles, when it says you have 0 miles left till empty, and it really means you can go a few more miles after that... I know with my Train, when it says there's 0 miles left, you're done. You're not going any farther.

I just put on the analog speedo/tach, and that comes with a digital fuel gauge.
I've already noticed that as the needle on the gauge cap nears "E", the digital one says I still have about 1/3 tank left...
I believe the new digital one is more accurate since I usually only manage to put about 3 gallons in at a time...

That is the same way my Slim operates as well, so I try to keep an eye on
the trip meter just so I'll know when I must stop for fuel.
The instructions with the new gauge indicate to add at least 2 gallons for like the first two fillups. I guess the ECM is going to run the digital gauge based on calculated fuel use....

Why would you even push it? I pay no attention to fuel gauges, it's just a general reminder lol.

Exactly as I do, and did so for the previous 5 years as well with my Dyna Superglide.

Putting go-juice in the tank is hardy rocket science

My Night Train is the first bike I've ever had with a fuel gauge. I don't pay much attention to it, I'm used to using the trip odometer. Never bother to toggle over to the range finder either.

I never look at my gauge on my deluxe. I know that I am good for at least 150 miles even if i am riding hard. But I normally just pull in to fill up when the low fuel light comes on.

The range adjust to how much fuel are using. Cause if you watch it as you are riding easy the mileage will increase and riding hard it will decrease.
