Default Gas Tank not drawing on On position

Just bought a used 98 Fatboy with a stretched tank. Even when the tanks are both filled it has an issue running unless the fuel position is on RES. There is a vented cap on the right and non vented on the left.

Looking at the fuel tube routing between tanks a friend mentioned he thinks it should be lower. Can anyone comment and do you think this could be the issue?

Thank you much.

Looking at this pdf and your pic, it seems the crossover is in the correct area.

Later twin cams 2000-up the crossover is below tht front tank mount.
I would check all your fuel lines make sure they're not clogged or kinked.
Also has the bike been sitting for a while? maybe carb is gummed up?

Petcock might be bad or clogged up. Is it hard to turn? I had the opposite problem mine even when turned to off was on so I replaced with a pingel and no more problems and turns with one finger.

Had this problem once on a bike, turned out it was the fuel filter clogged. It would only flow the top half of the tank.

Not sure whats going on now. It ran fine for about 30 miles last night while switched to ON position. Its not that hard to turn. I will probably replace the petcock.

Yep, sounds like the filter screen. It will pass fuel to a point then wont as the tank level gets down to a clogged area on the filter screen. The filter is a tube that goes vertically through the tank and sits on top of the petcock.

Just remove the petcock and pull out, the filter screen should come with it. Then clean or replace. It will make since why at certain levels fuel will flow and others it will not.

I had this on a bike once, filled it up and 45 miles later ran out of gas with half a tank left. Finally figured out switching the bike to reserve and it would go again. Disassembled and tank rust had clogged the filter screen. The tank rust fix is another story.
