Default 1999 FLSTC Electric Problem

This bike is new to me, just got it 2 months ago.

Really nice running Heritage Classic with 1999 Evo motor.

I was at the horse track in the middle of nowhere. I push the start button, the starter motor starts to turn, then stops and all electrical cuts out. Neutral light goes out, oil indicator light goes out, no headlight, tail light, turn signals, nothing.

I am a ways from anything, so I bang on my right-side controls (suspecting that the issue is a short in the engine kill switch) and the lights on the console come back on; neutral light and oil light.

I start the engine and on my way.

A week later, it does the same thing; push start button, start motor starts to turn, then all electric components cut out.

I replaced the switches and wire harnesses today with brand new kits. Still no electric.

I shuffled the 4 15 amp fuses. Battery is clean, charged and clamps secure. All electric connectors between tanks and under seat are secure.

What can I try next?

Yep. Check and clean means to really check the bolt and connection. Take it out and clean off any corrosion at the connection to be sure it grounds.

And enjoy your new bike, the last year of HD's greatest era!

That did the trick! The ground did not look that dirty, but cleaned the bolt and all the contact points with oven cleaner and I'm back in business.

Thank you so much!!

$#%$

Spoke too soon.

Now I find that any movement of the connection to the battery's negative terminal will bring the electric back. But then I push the starter button, the starter begins to turn and a spark comes off the battery's positive terminal, and all electric cuts out again.

I can repeat; move the connection to the battery's negative terminal and I get the light back on. Push the start button, spark comes off the positive terminal and electric cuts out.

What is going on? Voltage regulator?

I think you need to clean your battery terminals really well. Sounds like they are not making a good connection. The lead on the battery terminals can get a film on it that needs to be cleaned off.

Get a battery tender to keep that new battery new. Walmart sells an off brand that works pretty good.
