Default HD speedo 70900070A issue

I recently purchased a Harley combo speed and tach. The part number is 70900070A which fits many bikes including my 2008 FXSTC. I followed the directions exactly and during the install you plug in the data cable and it will download the mileage from the bike into the speedo. It didn't go quite like the directions said so I plugged it into the dash where it belongs and it came up showing NO CAL and the VIN ERR. Some of the lights came on but it is not working. According to the instructions the VIN ERR means it has already been "married" to a different bike. This was bought through a dealer I found while reading a thread on here and it is supposedly brand new. I have emailed the dealer and I'm waiting for a response. Their return policy says they don't take returns on speedo's among other things but I feel this unit is not new so I expect they would get me a new one. Have any of you installed this and had this problem?

That speedo comes with a 30+ mile "test" period, where you can install it and make sure it works, before it "marries" itself to your VIN, rendering it unusable on another bike.
A "VIN ERR" suggests it's already been used and married to another bike.
Take it back to the dealer and ask for, or rather, demand a replacement.

It looks factory fresh but something about the packaging caught my attention. Not sure what but I remember thinking that it didn't look like it was factory packed. I'm working on the place that sold it to me but I'm still waiting for an answer from them. I found them through another thread on this site and they had the best price I could find on the net. All I know is they better replace it.

If they don't come through and replace the speedo I will post the name of the place I bought it from.

I see the red! They are a Harley dealer and did not advetise the part as used. As a matter of fact I had to wait for them to ship it as they didn't have the part in stock. Now I wish I just went to a local dealer and bought the part. Handling this in person is better then through emails.

When I did mine I realized that when I plugged it into the data connector and turned on the ignition it did not transfer data until I turned on my run switch.

This is exactly why I deal with my local Dealer whenever possible.

Yea, sometimes you can find a better deal online, but after just one time getting screwed, it often negates all the saving that you've previously enjoyed.

Anyway, I hope it works out for you.
I love my Speedo/Tach.
