Bad voltage regulator?!
Thanks for the response loopie. I checked and cleaned all connectors and grounds (contact areas and mounting bolts) and, after reassembly, the battery still reads 14 volts at idle and 17 volts after I rev the engine for a few seconds. So... I'm going to gamble that it's the reg. Prices on ebay for OEM regs (from out-of-state dealers) was not that bad so I went ahead and ordered one. Hope it comes soon because it's PERFECT riding weather here in CA (he - he).
FYI
Mine was cutting off the dash... with high voltage code...This came on gradually over the summer and 10k miles. It eventualy became a repeatable fault (the stero would would cut out at the same time as the voltmeter crept up, and at one poin the boom box display would get triggered off (over voltage protection?))
Dealer replaced regulator and tested battery. He mentioned corrosion on main fuse and showed me corrosion on regulator, 3-pin, input socket. I kept the old regulator in case they had misdiagnosed..
This fixed the issue for two months.
Yesterday the speakers started cutting out and the volmeter read close to 15 volts.
I pulled the battery and cleaned the gearbox earth and the secondary earth in front of battery box plus re-tightened the terminals and cleaned up the main fuse..
This dropped the engine running voltage back to between 14 and 14.5 volts on the dash
It also raised the voltage shown when ignition was on auxilliary from 12 to 12.5 volts.
I think its fixed for now and that the regulator is good.
I currently believe that there must have been a poor conection somewhere in the charging circuit.
Earth, Secondary Earth, Battery Terminals, Main Fulse.
I did not touch the connections in and out of the regulator..
Hope that's useful info.
