other than the "required" first service at 1k miles, i do my own maintenance
on my 2010 fatboy. changed the oil at 10k in all 3 holes couple weeks ago.
didn't have a grease gun so i skipped the grease. bought one of those mini pistol grip ones today, figured it would be easier to get at the fittings.
first fitting i hit was the one in the neck. it took 2 3oz tubes of grease!
and it STILL wasn't oozing out anywhere! steering is a lot easier to move back and forth( this my first harley, had a metric cruiser before this) i always figured steering was stiff cuz it was a heavier front end.
could i have done any damage to the head bearings in the past 10k miles?
too hot to check the other fittings. over 100 degrees in the garage even with
a/c on full blast.
never wrenched a h/d before. is grease supposed to ooze out like on a car?
From what I've seen in here, what you experienced is normal. The factory just packs the bearings and doesn't use the neck zerk. When I have greased mine, I grease until I get some flow out of the bearings.

Same here. Greased it just like I would any other zerk fitting until grease started to come out. Took about 6-8 oz to get it there. Wiped up the excess and went riding.

i pumped in two full cartridges 6oz and nothing oozed out. took the bike for a ride in 90 degree + heat and nothing leaked.
I can tell you this though, steering is a HELL of a lot easier. almost scary. gotta get used to it.
making right turns from a stop i always had to pull hard on the bars. now they move like butter.
apparently dealer never added any grease and they didn't do the fallaway test.
Really didnt want to spend the almost $500 for the first service where they were supposed to go over everything but i didn't want to have any issues with warranty claims down the road.
next new bike, eff the 1k service. I'll do it myself.
What type or brand of grease are y'all using for the neck. Are you using the Harley grease? Like to have something good that the oils won't separate from the soap and drip. Thanks
Why is the 1000 mile service "required" by the dealer? I do that as well and my dealer has no issue with it. Actually will be doing it today.
been told by more than one harley owner that warranty would be an issue if the 1k wasn't done by dealer.
as a first time harley owner, i didn't know better.
