Default Right Grip Install Help

Guys-

I've used the search but I still can't get this. I got my left side grip on, but I'm trying to get the throttle side grip on. Its on a 01 deuce efi. The cables don't seem long enough (although I got them off old grip, just barely). I've tried to take the cable loose down below on the intake side, and that doesn't seem to help. Only adjustment I see in the whole system is up by the grip, 2 little chrome elbows that are threaded that the cable threads in/out of. In seems to give more cable.

I've got the front(I think return) cable on the grip, but the back one, throttle one, is giving me a fit. Its so close but I need another 1/8" or so.

My question is I guess, is there a trick here? My adjusters seem to only screw in maybe half way. If I've got the jam nut clear loose against the cable, I can maybe only get 1/2" from being close to it then it gets real tight. I don't know what to do. I'm suspecting the threads are rusty and junk, but I don't see how the cable pulls out of the throttle housing to allow me to run a tap through these chrome elbows.

Any help would be great!

Sorry for the long post but I'm a new guy and need help!

Thank you,
Brad

Try liquid wench on the adjuster threads. BTW, the front is throttle, back is idle.

yes you are correct, sorry after you said that I thought a little more about it and that makes sense. I have tried penetrating oil on it (liquid wrench brand or jb 80 not sure), but doesn't seem to help. I'll let it sit over night and see what happens.

If it doesn't seem to help, what are my options? I hate to say it but I've locked vice grips on the steel/chrome part of the cable, and used a 5/16 wrench and it won't loosen any further due to threads.

If you loosen both adjusters as far as they will go you should be able to get them in. You need all the slack from both the idle and throttle to get them on.

Like Jim Kraft said, make sure you loosen both of the cable adjusters all the way loose. Then start by attaching the throttle (front) cable ferrule first. Then you should be able to twist the throttle and it will pull out enough slack to allow the rear idle (return) cable to reach.

And just for reference, the chrome elbows just pull out of the bottom of the control housing (straight down) if you need to remove them for some reason. They are held in place by small retention clips in the bottom of the housing.

I had the same problem. I used needle nose pliers & determination.

Loosen both cables completely. Put the throttle on first. The you can twist the throttle to the idle and slide it in. If you have to you may need to take off
At the bottom ends too. Main thing is make sure adjusters are unscrewed fully to give maximum length.
You may want to get a manual if you don't have one. It will tell you how to adjust the cables correctly. It's not rocket science but there is a certain way it should be done. You don't just tighten them up. Good luck

Thanks for the help guys, I'll look at it this weekend and report back. I'm thinking I don't have the cables loose enough. They aren't all the way spun out so you can see any threads....but they are tight, meaning the threads inside the chrome elbow must be junk/rusted. I'll try removing the elbow and running a tap through it.

I don't have a manual, but I think I've got an idea how to adjust the cables. I'm thinking adjust to just open all the way, and then adjust so just closes all the way...and then give some slack on the close so you know the throttle isn't stuck on even a little. I felt it before I removed the old grip, so I know how much play it had.

Adjust throttle first. I think you turn throttle wide open and adjust till it touches the stop on the throttle body. Then turn wheel full either right or left , can't remember which way of top of my head, then adjust idle cable. Be sure to check for free movement of the grip before final tightening and be sure to make sure you have full movement of bars without binding the cables. A manual would tell you proper, I'm trying to get it out of my old brain.

Well guys thanks for all the advice, but I ended up needing more "slack" in the cable so I tried to loosen the threaded adjuster more (as all of the threads weren't taken up yet, prob 3/8" in each thread still showing), and ended up twisting the "bolt" portion off of the cable.

So, I went to the harley store and ordered some new cables. He measured them, so hopefully they are right when they arrive as I leave for sturgis Saturday (5 days). I think installing them won't be too bad. If you guys have any more advice let me know! The cables were getting worn by the looks of it anyways, they were rusty inside, and a part under the gas tank had warn through the outer coating showing the cable.

From what I can tell, the cable could be 31" (which I think is size he ordered) or it could be 50", but all that really matters is the length of the cable that sticks past the adjuster. As long as that length is the same as my old cable it should work, correct? Obviously a longer cable would have a ton of slack and wouldn't look right.

Maybe the length of cable that sticks beyond the coating/elbow is a standard length and they are all the same?
