Looks more like a pulley design or materials problem. Don't see how the belt being too loose would make it pull any harder on the pulley.
It was probably going downhill for a long time, and maybe even showing stress cracks near the hub before it actually broke. Who made the pulley?
+1
if i had to guess i would say it was a cast pulley and had a stress crack in one or more places. i would also guess it was probably making some kind of noise like clacking or clicking before it said ***** it !!!
no used NEW bolts from HD. no the pulley didnt come apart the hub did on the inside. but it is a 120 hp bike, not that i think that did it. its like someone pulled the pulley half way out of the hub then spun it and tore the guts out of the hub. Teflon

This is very plausible. Either the sprocket STOPPED while moving, or pulley failed under acceleration. I don't see any other way to explain the spoke pattern.
i'm aware of that.. i was commenting on the pic posted. i would really like to see pics of the OP's wheel/hub that ripped out..
i would think if it was a trans or bearing lock up of some type it would have ripped the teeth off the belt on the small/trans end of it and not damage the sprocket.
too tight of a belt tension should destroy a bearing not a sprocket.
i will post pics soon, it didnt lock up at all, thank god! no warning either, i hit 3rd gear on an incline not under heavy load and BAM it broke. it was in an instant. I had just road home at over 75 mph for an hour with no issues or noises. Teflon
more info after todays quick look. looks like the the threads pulled out of the holes part way then the pulley spun while still in the hub and tore the rest of the hub apart! All the bolts are relatively straight which seems nuts to me. no marks on swing arm or the heads of the bolts. pulley is bent tho which has us thinking it bent under torque then came apart???? parts on the way to fix her and no more DNA stuff for me!
