I just got a new Heritage a few weeks ago and so far I've added engine guards, a Grasshopper backrest, wind deflectors and HD "get a grip" hand grips. Also, my Cycle Shack slip ons just arrived today. Enjoy the ride!

I rode mine easy for the first 40 miles or so to break in then I rode her like I normally do.
Some claim to ride hard several times between the first 20 to 50 miles, like put her in 2nd or 3rd and run her rpm's up and then no brakes to slow down (with engine only), do 1/2 throttle 10 times, then 3/4 ths throttle 10 times and finally WOT 10 times, also make sure to let her cool between runs supposed to seat the rings better.. some do, some don't.
Here's some good reading on how to. just pick one for Urself.
https://www.google.com/search?source...le.JKDgChMSIeo

I also add the Son had His last two broke in on the Dyno tune while tuning when brand new. another way to do it.

New i added Engine guards, Grips, and the stop/brake/run module for the rear.

At one K service I did, SE/AC, Rush muffs, SERT tuner and dyno and changed to Syn3 oils. Also added the Touring rear seat, detachable sissy bar and touring sissy bar pad along with FloorBoards for the wifes comfort and new FloorBoards inserts and brake and shift levers for me.

Between the 1 and 5k service I added about another $2k of chrome, more leather fringe and the PaPa bag inserts ( which installs easy and work great).

Then at the 15k I added the Andrews 26 cams and retuned her. Great. "Great" - value for the money IMO.

Since then and for the last 30K miles its been mostly Gas, Tires, and Brakes.. Ohh yeah, Wax and leather conditioner.

Issues' - Needed new hoses and filter inside the tank at 33k and a new Battery last spring. other than that she been the best of all the bikes I've ever owned so far..

Get the Got Saggy Bags system. Easy install, looks great. One thing I love on mine is the quick release bags. Makes cleaning the bike so much easier.

I bought my 2009 Heritage used so some of the add-ons that are installed on her were installed by a previous owner, however below is the list of what's been added to my Heritage since it was new.

Remember, my ride is 4 years old and this >$6000 list of add-ons were installed over that period of time. My advice is to ride it, enjoy it and add to it as time rolls by. It won't be long before you have a list like mine.

One of the first things I added to my 2012 Heritage was the tach/speedo combo in spun aluminum. Then were the grips, rush slip on pipes and stage 1 (harley tax). Then I went crazy with the Willie G theme. It's up to you really...

Safe miles and fun is what counts. Good luck.

First things I added were an engine guard and Kuryakyn ISO grips with a throttle boss. Reasons why, I wear protection, why not add some to my bike, plus it's chrome! and the factory grips are so atrocious.

Mod wise, the sky is the limit, and holy hell, does this forum (softail models especially) offer ideas. Look at other's, see things you like and take a bit here and there. Make it your own.

Break-in period, I followed the manual, minus opening it up a bit from time to time. I too am a first time Harley owner and most of my advice is regurgitation of what I have read here.
