Default Is upgrading my 88 worth it?

I have a '05 Deluxe with 48,000 miles.Last year I had the cam tensioner upgrade, adjustable pushrods,Andrew 37 cams,TTS Mastertune and V&H Bigshots installed. My bike runs great, but it is loud.My Indy tried to talk me into putting a 2 to 1 pipes on but I went with the Bigshots.I'm thinking of going with diffent pipes but I would to have it tuned and dyno again. If I do this I was thinking upgrading to 95,96,103.I don't know how big I can go with a 5 speed? Will I be able to keep the same cams?I know a 2 to 1 pipe will give more HP,but I don't want the bike to be as loud.I don't race my my bike so,is it worth upgrading from a 88?I haven't talk to my indy yet. Thanks for any input.

You could go 95-98 with new piston and jugs. If you wanted a 103 you would have a bore and stoke it (piston, jugs, and crank). You could keep your cams or upgrade. Heads are about the best place to put some money. You can gain a lot of power in the heads. If I did mine again I would had spent a little extra on the heads. Also research cams and depending on what kind of riding you do go from there (2up, solo, want low or mid rpm power). Also you can go with a 2-1 pipe and gain power but a lot of people don't because they don't like the look. And yes you will have to have it retuned. It will change your air fuel ratio. I changed my pipes (still from a 2-2 into a different brand of 2-2) and it changed my ratio a lot and had to get it retuned. If you want a great website all about building/built Harley motors check out www.harleytechtalk.org. There are a lot of engine builders on the website and dyno sheets that could help you out a lot.

No sense talking about the same thing in two different threads running simultaneously.

There are some good thought in the link below:

Ahhhh...you're a lightweight!

Just passed 137,000 on her last week after finishing my annual 1600 mile trip up North ( and still uses no oil.)

Get some miles on that thing before you mouth off to me!

I did the same upgrade as you, 37s and tensioner upgrade. I then went with a 98" kit from Hillside Performance this year. Scott will tailor a set of pistons and cylinders to match the compression ratio to the cams for right around $600. Worth every penny. Really woke the the cams up closer to 2000 RPMs. The engine is now effortlessly powerful, it doesn't seem as "busy" at highway speeds in 5th or any other gear for that matter. Let us know what you decide. Try putting in the "quiet" baffles to take the harshness out of the exhaust note.

When mine does start burning oil, I'll probably go with the S&S 97" pistons and cylinders kit. Supposedly stronger alloy than the stock units, when the bore gets past 3.87" ( like on my 95" now,) the heavier duty alloy makes sense to me.

After reading the thread that Stiggy posted.I think I just need new 2/1 pipes.I'll do some reseach for pipes.I want my bike to be heard, but not as loud as it is with the Bigshots
