Which tour-pak rack is correct for a 2008 Heritage?
I'm trying to determine which of these racks is the right one. Both are for sale on ebay.
Each auction claims the part number is 53066-00C. That part number is correct for my 2008 Heritage but those racks are NOT the same. The one with the slides in front (left picture) match my detachable backrest/rack.
I bought a Deluxe Style tour pak trunk on a Road King rack this weekend for $200 and want to use it on my Heritage. My savings gets whacked if I buy the wrong rack. I know I could buy a new one but would rather not. The picture on Harley USA does not show the rack off the bike or from an angle I can see the front hooks.
Thanks for any advice one can give.

That's my initial thought as well. I'd still like a strong confirmation. I'm sure the auction will run out before I know.
I do live in north Austin and have been in the area for close to 25 years.
Mine's #2478. It doesn't look quite the same as the pictures anymore. More black copper and chrome on the front end.
Got lots more stuff to list in my signature.

If the one on the right will not fit a 2008 Heritage, then why does the HD instructions show that configuration?

I was bidding on the same one on e-bay but lost the bid.
It wasn't worth $140 to me.
I did find another one for $100 so it would be helpful to find out if the one of the right will fit a 2009 Heritage. As shown above, the instructions for 53006-00C shows the one on the right.

That's the other one I planned to bid on.
You make a very good point about the one that ended a couple hours ago. I didn't think to pay that much attention to the instructions. But I do have the detachable backrest and it goes on like the left one. Ugh!
I'm at home now and can pull out the catalog. I find that next to the picture of the tail end of the bike on page 228 of the 2013 Accessories catalog, the rack picture shows one that matches the picture on the right. For some reason the rack picture does not come up in the online catalog.
I don't know why two racks so different in design would carry the same part number.
I agree, $140 may be a little steep unless you know the seller is making new product available. I found the correct part number online from one dealer for $180 rather than the $225 retail.
I can't afford to buy another wrong rack.
I hope to get something out of the Road King one I have but it also does not match the picture in the catalog. Maybe Harley changed the shape without giving it a new part #?

The previous owner had it on a mid-90's Heritage.
To my surprise the rack fit my 09 Heritage, however it has support bars that somewhat limits the opening of my saddle bags, plus it's not easily removable. Also, it's in so-so condition where-as my "Renee" is in pristine condition, so that bothers me a bit

So apparently various racks will fit, perhaps just not perfectly.
I bid on the one on e-bay but stopped at $125.
I got a "second chance" offer available to "buy it now" for $102.
I think I'll go for it.
BTW- I think the rack on e-bay is a non-OEM made rack, but it if works that's fine with me.

I have both the solo and 2 up racks. I don't recall how much I paid for them back in 08 but I seem to recall that they jacked the price up a lot after I got mine.
It always causes a butt hurt to buy stuff for bikes. They got us by the ***** and sometimes if you want something you just have to close your eyes and whip out the credit card. Or have the wife buy it and don't look at the receipt
.
I believe you may be right. With the reverse hooks if the rear locks came loose, the rack is still not going to just fall off, where-as with the forward facing hooks there is a possibility. However as long as the rack was properly installed, it shouldn't matter.
From my view, the two configurations that "Wood" pictured look like identical racks except for the hooks.
As I look at both racks, the "base" of the hooks look to be in about the same place, so I imagine both configurations would work. One you would slid in forward and one you would pull back.
I'm pulling the trigger on the "reverse" hooked model. At $115 including shipping, I think I'll be OK. Once I get it installed I'll post the results.

I pulled up my PDF of the 2008 Accessories catalog and find that the part number for the detachable rack is 53066-00B. So they did make some sort of change. I'd bet it was the direction of the hooks. Since the Road King rack I have attached to the trunk does not match the one in the current catalog, I guess that's the change. There's no picture of the rack in this catalog.
The rack was $25 cheaper then and the trunk was $30.
I'm beginning to think that both racks I found on eBay are right but from different years.
I was going to ask if you didn't buy that rack to let the seller know he could contact me and I'd take it.
Thanks for the advice and thoughts everyone.
