Default new bike engine noise

My bike is a 2014 heritage and it only has 500 miles on her so far. But it sounds like a sewing machine. I have V&H slip on's . Now with the wind shield on it is noticeable and it has been like this from day one. My old bike had an S&S 107 evo and was a much louder bike also it had no windshield. But it did not sound like a sewing machine. I did ride a 2010 heritage with 1000 miles on the clock and it sounded the same. Is this a new bike noise?? Will it go away with more miles or when I get the air cleaner and a tune??? Or is like this with all Harleys????? swifty

Wait till you get to 1K, then switch to synthetic - it'll quiet right down.

Actually that noise is a feature built into every new Harley counterbalanced 103 cid engine equipped with the new "Suburban Friendly" OEM exhaust system. Without it, you might dismount without realizing that the engine is still running, causing bodily injury and/or property damage.

It's normal in the Twin Cam engines to have a bit more top end noise than you heard in the Evo or older engines. It's simply the valve train noise and you are hearing it because your bike is quieter than older engines and you added the windshield which reduces wind noise.

When I got my Deluxe it had 7 miles on it and the motor felt tight as hell. Also, sounded like a Honda to me (not a sewing machine.) Around 3,000 miles it started to feel "right." I switched mine to synthetic 20/50 after the break in period and the valve train noises got a but louder.

Ok that's what I thought. And thanks for you time and opinions. I will be getting a better flow air cleaner and I'm going with a tts and the dyno. just after my 1000 mile service. Im also going with amsoil at 1k.
I'm hoping the noise will diminish as the engine gets a few thousands miles on her because with just the motor running in the drive way you can her the sewing machine sound. My old 107 S&S all you heard was the exhaust.

If any one has any more to add or what worked for you Im all ears....

so, let me say that the first time i put a windshield on my bike, the engine scared the crap out of me. I thought i was riding on a bomb waiting to detonate. it's amazing what you hear when the wind isn't in your ears. What you probably heard, sounding like a sewing machine, were the valves and valve springs tinking away. it's normal stuff.

I recently moved from a 2013 Slim to a 2013 Heritage. I just thought the Slim made some top end noise !!! Having that windshield makes the valve train noise much more noticeable. The Slim had 6000 at trade-in, the Heritage 1500. The Slim had quietened down some but was still noticeable. The Slim had Rush slip-ons and I still could hear the top end rattling down the road! The Heritage had the oil changed to synthetic at 1000 and at 1500 is still annoying as hell to listen to. Still have stock exhaust on the Heritage, but that changes tom. Going to a 2 into 1 system with a Ness back-plate and associated parts for the air intake. Hopefully I'll hear more exhaust, less valve train. I'l let you know.

So true!!! I went riding yesterday with a buddy who bought a 2013 leftover heritage. He got his bike 3 weeks before I bought mine . Both bikes have around 500 mile on the clock and his bike sounds just like mine. The more I ride the bike the less I hear it now. Now I'm just waiting to get to 1000 miles so after the service it gets the air cleaner , tts master tuner and the dyno!!!! It should be a lot of fun!!!!Anyway thanks for putting my mind at ease..... swifty
