Default how to destroy your throttle cables

I decided to go with chrome housing on both sides, left was 5 minutes...throttle cables were a disaster. It says you can wiggle and pull them out....really?? I used 3 types of penetrating oil...pulled , tugged, twisted...until both end ***** fell off...what a waste. So what appeared to be an easy task, turned into an expensive ordeal. There has to be a better design than that! Of course they were on my 98 Fatboy for 15 years and oxifized....but gawd, what a misery. Any tips or tricks for my edification at some later time, should I ever encounter this again?

Was it the oxidation that caused your issues?

In the middle of doing a bar swap right now. Without any oil, I was pulling and twisting on those cable ends to where I was worried I was going to break them. Quick spray with some WD-40, and both popped right out. That was on a 13 Slim, so no years of oxidation or road grit or whatever else. I'd guess that it was, in fact, oxidation at the split ring that holds them in there, and that some time or the penetrating oil to do it's thing probably would have worked... but who knows. Tough to let something sit that you KNOW should be a few minutes worth of work. Patience isn't exactly my strong suit, so call it a hunch or suggestion rather than advice.

My sympathies to you, I know full well how a "15 minute job" can turn into an expensive weekend project. The next one will indeed only take 15 minutes (like the one I did on my FLSTC 2 days ago-it REALLY DID take 15 minutes).

Honest...I yanked and pulled my guts out...from now on I shall periodically spray a penetrant into the housing insert..
