Default Stage upgrade questions

2014 softail slim
I was at the dealership today getting an estimate for some damage and I started asking about performance upgrades. Everyone has different opinions in stages and what they consist of - I currently just have a typical stage 1 but am looking for a bit more power.

I was thinking about just going with cams, cam plate, high flow oil pump, and perfect pushrods....HE was talking about a jump to stage 4 for $3,800. I know dealers want to upsell, but that's a big one. He had the whole schebang! Cams, heads, plate, oil pump, injectors, everything ! Looked good on paper, but not sure it makes sense to dive right to that.

My question is, what is the next sensible upgrade after stage 1, when you are looking for more power, but that can be added on to down the road?

Looking for some more power and better overall performance.

For starters you don't need a new cam plate or oil pump.

nvsteve - I was under the impression that stock cam plate and oil pump were one if the biggest "robbers of power" and simply upgrading them with make a nice difference.

I wonder if the balancer can take a big jump in HP. Might be better suited to a Dyana or Tourer.

From my years on the forums, it seems like most people upgrade their cams after upgrading the exhaust and air filter.

TenMidgets is right. The counter balancer robs the 103 of torque and horsepower.

One dealer recommends the whole stage 4 at about $3,800

The other dealer recommends starting smaller and building up. Saying the 253E cand and perfect fit pushrods are a good start .

Any idea if there is much of a gain with just cams and pushrods ?

Lastly - how do these types of upgrades change engine sound? I'm not a big fan of the. "Sewing machine " sound that comes from the Slim ....can't tell if that found is engine or primary ...

+1. Harley has redesigned both the oil pump and the cam plate over the years. No reason to spend money on either one for a mild street engine.

all you need is some simple bolt in cams that fit your riding habits and needs along with a good F/M system to adjust the fuel and timing events, then a Good tune after the work is done.

stg1 and bolt in cams will make 95% of the riders wanting a little more-- Very Happy.

I have to agree with this, I'd say walking in talking about cams and wanting "a little more" and someone trying to talk you into a $4000 build is trying way to hard to up sell... I'd be turned off really quickly if that happened to me. You can always do more later if the cams aren't doing it for you but I'd bet you'll be happy for a while with those.

I talked to S and S cycle about their step 2 - they recommended their MR103 cam, quickie pushrod, tappets and their Dyno jet PowerVision.

Sounded pretty good, half the price of the big stage four, and you can always build on it. Anyone have any experience with this set up?
