I have a place in Hendersonville NC which we use as a vacation place. . Last weekend we decided to ride from Brevard to Waynesville over Hwy 276. (Great ride by the way) and we dediced to ride the Cherohala skyway near Robbinsville. I thought I remembered it came out in Tellico Plains Tenn which is somewhere near Gatlinburg , right? Hell No.... it comes out near I-75 about halfway between Knoxville Tenn and Chattanooga tenn. about 208 miles from Hendersonville. The skyway is a wonderful ride, much more relaxed than the dragon and well worth the ride. Just don't start it so that you end up in Tellico plains at 8pm and then ride back to Hendersonville. Your passenger will not be amused ( No need to ask how I know). I'd recommend the skyway as a great ride when the leaves turn, no traffic to speak of, no other roads, just nice turns with good asphalt. Just leave to ride it early and then turn around and ride it back.
The wife and i did those rides in Jul, I absolutely concur, great riding and scenery up there. We would really like to make it back in the fall to. I got a buddy that has a house/s up near Roan Mtn TN. Pretty much more north than the cherokee area, but I'm sure it will be just as beautiful.
Actually.... there are more wrecks reported on the Cherahola.... I guess the looky loos look too much, and aim too little. But I agree, it's a beautiful ride, and fun to just relax and enjoy... but don't do it like we did last fall... when it's a high of 41 in Robbinsville, it's just a wee bit cooler on top... LOL like snow flurries cool
With the reduced traffic, why are there more wrecks there? The curves for the most part are more gentle and probably fewer than the dragon or hellbender. I thought it was a relaxing ride not dodging the squids like the dragon. I'll bet in another month if there are any leaves left, it will be beautiful

I can't figure what route you took. One end of the Cherohalla begins in Tellico Plains near the Bald Creek Falls area. But that is not near Gatlinburg.
Jerry, believe me, I now know it does not come out anywhere neat Gatlinburg at all. I had confused Tellico plains and Strawberry plains, thinking that the distance back would not have been too far from Asheville. If I had only consulted a map before we rode, we would have either ridden earlier or another day and then after getting a snack in Tellico Plains , we would have re-ridden the skyway and came back to Robbinsville. I learned the hard way that a faint map is better than a great memory. LOL
There are more accidents there because of rubber necking and decreasing radius turns. There are a couple of turns that if you are going too fast, the curve tightens up and you can't hold the turn. I heard about several accidents because of it. It's a scenic ride, not a race track.
