I used Carowinds (the theme park) as my starting point, since it's near 77 and Carowinds Blvd, most people around here can adjust the starting point to their location on the map, or can figure out how to get to the right access road to the route from there...

I'll have to look at those routes. Sometimes I can plan time to ride, sometimes it's kind of spontaneous, esp depending on weather, etc., but I'll try to hit you up sometime.
I have gone down that 21 route before, although there may be more than one way to do it. This is the way I've been: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...1,2.911377&z=9
You have to zoom in, but you take 21, which I think is exit 77 to hwy5/21 to the left (if heading 77 south), and take 21 all the way til it ends in a T intersection, you take a left and then a quick right onto 97 (you have to zoom in a little on the map to see these roads), and take 97 all the way to the bridge at Lake Wateree.
As soon as you go down 21 a ways from this exit, there's a biker bar and leather shop on the rt hand side, then down 21 a ways, there's another biker bar on the left, once on 97, there's a biker bar, and general store/gun store on the right, and all the way to the bridge, there's a biker bar on the left, and a gas station/snack bar on the right, just before the bridge. I don't know anything about what's after that bridge, besides what I see on the map.
That last part of 21 along the lake is nice, and 97 is a nice curvy / wooded road, and the lake is a nice destination too. W/ friends it took most of the day to do this, stopping and talking a lot at each destination (some had free food on some days), but by myself it goes a lot quicker, unless I run into someone I know I guess...
Is this the 21 route you were thinking of, or another part of 21?
Ok, I know I'm the only one posting here right now, but if you check out any of those scenic routes I linked too, try clicking on the Terrain tab view of the map in upper right. I always looked at satellite views or map views, but never paid much attention to terrain views, I think it gives you a better idea of what the road and surroundings are like when you zoom in on the routes, it even shows elevation levels if you zoom in far enough. Check it out!!!

Your longer route from Charlotte thru Chimney Rock on 74A and then the BRP to CHerokee is a great route. We took that way (+) in reverse last year. We left Candler (east of Maggie Valley) thru Maggie Valley to Cherokee and started at the end of the BRP. Rode the BRP to 74A near Asheville, took 74A thru Lake Lure then 74 thru Charlotte to I95 to just south of Fayetteville. We ran 74a on the way to Maggie Valley and definitely wanted to run it again on the way home.
We were riding 2 up and stopped often on the BRP for pictures. Made the whole ride in 11 hours. This was last Sep. when the area ran out of gas so we stopped often to top off just in case. Still made good time.

Cool, thanks BugByter...
So I was over in this thread, and someone suggested a route to take w/ specific roads using Cherokee as a base, so I mapped it out, see what you think.
It goes up 441 but not all the way to Gatlinburg, which I hear can be busy at peak times, so this takes a left through the park then drops down and loops around and has a lot of riverside parkways and stuff....
I had to make the trip route in a couple legs, or it wouldn't make the full circle, A and C are both Cherokee casino, and B was just a reference point where I had to make the last leg start from, or it wouldn't make the circle...
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=777+Casino+Drive,+Cherok ee,+NC+28719+(Harrah%27s+Cherokee)&daddr=TN-73+to:Hwy-19+W%2FUS-19%2FUS-74+to:777+Casino+Drive,+Cherokee,+NC+28719+(Harrah %27s+Cherokee)&geocode=FY0vHQId9tUI-yFO9zZ5AFlTbg%3BFfBCIAIdXk4D-w%3BFdvfGQIdKNMC-w%3B&hl=en&gl=us&mra=ls&via=1&dirflg=h&sll=35.2907 49,-83.653679&sspn=0.102004,0.22316&ie=UTF8&ll=35.4891 88,-83.642349&spn=0.814029,1.785278&t=p&z=10
Course you have to really zoom in and follow the route to see what it might be like...
Ok, I tweaked it a little, I forgot one transition the guy was talking about, using 28 between 129 and 19, so here is a revised option, looks shorter but not faster, and adds more water views maybe? From what I can tell on the map.....

I like leaving the house here in Yadkin county taking some back roads and coming out on hwy.21 just north of Elkin. Go north on 21 and ride a few miles and turn left off of it towards Stone Mountain park and turn right off that road towards the park entrance. Right at the park entrance there is a road that turns back to the right , Oklahoma rd. Turn right on it brings you back out on 21 at the top of the mountain. Run 21 north into Independance,Va. and turn left on hwy. 58 west. Follow 58 all the way into Damasscus,Va. and look for signs to lead to Shady Valley,Tn and hwy.33. At the cross roads in S-V turn left on hwy. 421 , the section from S-V to Mountain City,Tn is called "the snake". In Mountain City turn right on hwy. 67 towards Elizabethton , follow 67 to hwy.321 and turn left on it back towards Boone,NC and pick up 421 back south. I know a crap load of other roads up that way but there is no way I can put'em all in writing!
For anyone using 321 between Lenoir and Blowing Rock, saw this closure notice on the news:
*********************
HIGHWAY 321 DELAYS (construction between Lenoir and Blowing Rock) -- NCDOT is widening Highway 321 between Lenoir and Blowing Rock. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, crews often close Highway 321 from noon through 2 p.m. for blasting operations. The best alternate route is to avoid traveling between Lenoir and Blowing Rock during early afternoon hours, as all available detours are quite long. If traveling from Charlotte, consider using I-77 North to Highway 421 (Exit 73, north of Statesville), and then follow Highway 421 North into Boone. From Lenoir, use NC 18 to US 421, or use US 64 (to Morganton) to NC 181 (to Linville) to US 221 (to Blowing Rock,) as alternate routes.

Here's a map link to the road and area, in case it affects anyone... http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...,1.785278&z=10
