Ok...towed my bike fro Florida to Charleston. Stayed at a hotel about four miles outside.
Rode my bike into downtown Charleston....found a few parking lots/gargares..."NO MOTORCYCLES"....some said "for your safety....no motorcycles allowed". OK....whatever.
Dirt parking lot near A.W. Shucks and right next door to Wasabi Resteraubt,,,,,,allows bike parking. $8 a day.
Charleston is COOL! I loved the people. Great FOOD! Awesome.......but, come on. I am not with a BIKE GANG. Let me park my stock muffled bike in a parking space...OK?
Other than the bike parking restriction.......Charleston Rocks.
Charleston is not a biker friendly town. There was a big protest from bikes a while back when they started ticketing bikes for parking two to a space. They went downtown and took all of the parking spaces with one bike per space. They stopped giving out the tickets but I don't have any direct experience that they do or do not ticket dual parked bikes.
They don't want you here. The BS about safety in the garages is pure gobbledygook. I am sure that someone could take this one to court, just like Myrtle Beach, and win. A motorcycle is a legally registered vehicle with the DMV and has the same rights and protections as any other passenger vehicle. There are cars driven all the time in South Carolina that could blow up at any moment. Safety my butt...
At about the same time the Heritage Rally was being held near Charleston, the city began making life difficult for bikers. The story I heard is that it was at the request of some of the wealthy downtown residents and Mayor Joe Riley. So most of the people I know avoid the downtown area. It is a shame because there are some nice places there.
From: South of Raleigh, and west of the coast, NC.
Haven't ever had any issues with Charleston have rode down several times and stayed at the biker friendly Best Western near Joe Riley Stadium in town also at several other places throughout the years. Daughter graduated from The Citadel and still lives there......Charleston DOES ROCK....Especially if you stay away from the "tourist traps"....Get off the beaten path......Oh yeah, we WALKED the new Cooper River Bridge and got some awesome pics...as well as some exercise....
It's funny that you post this.... we were down there just two weekends ago, and noticed how few bikes there were downtown. We saw 15x as many Jeep Wranglers as we did bikes, at least.
It's a great place though, no doubt about it. Wife & I are talking about moving down, we liked it so much.

OH YEAH! And 10 times as many Range Rovers!
I heard/found out that some of the parking lots in Charleston
claim "no motorcycles, for your safety"...is
they claim people have had legs burned from hot bike exhaust
pipe and engines. Not real logical, but I guess it "could"
happen....so they use it to keep bikes out.
I found a lot finally that I used whenever I was in town,
and was sure to show appreciation to the attendant.
I was never hassled by anyone because I was on a bike.

That reminds me -- another thing I noticed is that most of the bikers down there, were wearing shorts. A good number in sandals/flipflops too.
My wife and family are taking a bike trip this next week to Charleston. We have been through there before but never stayed. We will be ridding in from Jackson,MS. Gonna spend a few days there then head to Myrtle beach. We are staying at the Mill House I think ( thats what its called). Any tips or suggestions for places to eat or rides to make while we are there?

That is where we stayed; nice place, right in the downtown. We flew down, so I can't say much for rides. However, restaurants...
- Fleet Landing Nice place right on the water, about a 8 min walk from the hotel.
- WildWingCafe Again, about a 5 min walk from the hotel. Right on Market, which is another cool place to go for shopping, if that's your cup of tea.
- There is a place just up from WildWing Cafe that is a rooftop bar. You walk in through the bar on the street level, and just go up. I forget the name, but its at the other end of the block, along the market.
