I was wondering if I could get some help from you folks. I have been riding for a little while now and I originally came from A honda VFR 800 which I think might have spoiled me on power. I recently bought a sporster 48 and im still trying to break it in. Almost hit the 1000 k marker. I have to now decide weather if the 1200 is enough power. I have taken up to 80 MPH and it seems like its pretty tightly wound at those speeds. Im not sure if i should spend some money on remaping, pipes, air filter and anything else that can get me more power without costing me too much. Or I should sell and go for another bike. I wouldn't consider myself a power W@#$ or anything but 80 just is nothing in highways and freeways. The 48 was at the max budget range and now I have to make upgrades but i don't want to put the money into it if its not going to get me the results. Thanks for listening to my cool story!
Don't know how different the '14 is but I believe it has a cat in the exhaust. I can tell you that after I did just an exhaust, it woke up a ton. It went from straining at eighty to cruising smoothly at 85 all day long.
I have had a 2011 48 for a little over 3 months. I felt almost like you also. Only it wasn't a lack of power but more that 5th gear seamed like it was screaming above 75. I was constantly reaching for a 6th gear that isn't there. But, to me, power was not an issue. I could, and did, hit 110mph a few times with a passenger on the back. Just recently I added a new exhaust. It improved my interstate riding dramatically. Going above 75 was no issue anymore. And once I added the new breather it improved even more. I just got back in the house after riding all day. Spent some time on the interstate and was between 85 and 100 most of the time. No issues at all. Now whether or not my experience lines up with yours is unknown. But I can tell you I considered moving to a Dyna for a minute partially because of the 6th gear. Now I am extremely happy with the 48 and glad I didn't switch.
I can understand, you being young and wanting more power but do you really NEED more speed and if so does the county you live in NEED more money from the fines you will pay for speeding
My last Vtwin (Avatar) was a 6 speed. I almost wish it wasn't because of the way it was geared. There was no power in 6th unless I was doing 80mph+....
FWIW, I'm jelly of all you guys with the new sporty's...I'm really thinking about getting one and putting the 70 on the back burners
I have a '12 1200 Custom (samish engine) and find that 5th gear is only needed above 60-65 and below that the bike lugs a bit and everything dealing with the engine is stock. Are the 14's underpowered due to the exhaust change? I run at 75 mph and that is the low end of the power band in 5th. Maybe the two tone red that I have is making the bike faster?
I run my 14 Custom 1200 @80 all day long on Houston highways. Slip ons, Sreaming Beagle AC, & Fuel Moto EFI. It's a little buzzy, but able to handle it and more.

haha Country is USA, Utah, SLC, cops psh!! its all about having it there if you need it. 80 mph on highways it kind feels like riding a scooter out there!!. thanks for the info!!
thanks for all the reply's sounds like I need to invest in those little upgrades and keep on riding it. I love the look and the price like i said was at the top of my budget. For harleys anyways I could have got a Japanese brand but well NVM. Its almost end of riding season here in utah for fair weather riders anyways. Do you guys have any recommendations on websites that have lots of sporster 48 parts I can choose from? or anyone from Utah area tell me about good shops?
Do some research on here (search and read existing threads) and you'll find several ways to achieve the results you're looking for. I've put ~11k miles on my '13 Custom. ~2,700 after installing a BS a/c and having it remapped and it's a whole different ride. I installed some aftermarket slip ons after the first month or so of owning it. Prior to the new set up I was in 5th at 70 mph + and she felt pretty wound up at 80 even though I saw 100 once or twice. Now I don't see 5th unless I'm at 80 mph + and now at 100 it feels like there's plenty of throttle left for me. As you'll read, even though they're thought of as "cruisers" Sportsters like rpms so that may be something you'll have to get use to while breaking it in. It's something I've gotten use to as well.
Check out DK Customs.
Congrats on the new scoot! Ride safe. Keep us posted on your changes.

Congratulations on the 48!
Excellent bike, that will run stronger, faster, and be able to run 100+ all day long with a good Stage 1 upgrade.
