Default is this right?

Ok I have an 01 883 converted it to chain drive awhile back. Initial sprockets 23/55 now running 23/51 so my questions is I was able to hit the speedo to 110 and great gas mileage with initial setup and now I'm lucky if I can hit 90 and gas mileage has gone down....so is that sound right. I drive the same route everyday and nothing else has changed on the bike. So I wondering if I should change back to the 55 tooth rear.

Actually a lot has changed in your setup. I bet your RPMs are much higher in each gear since the change which affects your gas mileage. If you think about what you did it will make perfect sense to you.

I was searching the internet trying to get a grasp on it and the way people explain it and charts show it i Ihought it would be a higher top speed with the smaller sprocket. So will my top speed go up and rpms go down if I switch back to the bigged rear sprocket?

Why did you change to the 51?

To elaborate on rwhisen's first post, the smaller sprocket has a smaller diameter, so each point on it is traveling a smaller distance to complete a full revolution than on the larger sprocket. Think about how cars have differentials to allow the wheels to turn at different speeds - it's because going through a turn, the outside wheel is travelling a greater distance in the same amount of time.

When I changed the sprocket I thought I had a 51 tooth on it because that's what the Indy shop I bought it at told me. Rwhisen I've seen those chart the say different onthe side bars (higher tool speed and more bottom end). So if I went by what that chart says then why did my top speed go down because I went down I teeth.
