Default First Upgrade!

Just got my first motorcycle, an Iron 883. Im dying to make some changes to it and make it my own.

Has there ever been an upgrade you made that you realized was completely unnecessary?

And any suggestions on what my first upgrade should be?

Thinking either new bars, exhaust, or air filter upgrade.

Thanks!

I always start with the seat replacement for comfort followed by exhaust and air cleaner for sound and better performance, then I do everything else that I want to do to a particular bike like grips, pegs, sissy bars, etc.

Congrats on your new iron. Those bikes look killer. My buddy has one and the first thing he did to his was a 1200 kit. I just bought a 15 Street bob last week and order new exhaust last night. I can't have my harley sounding like a honda. As far as pointless mods I think that has a lot to do with your taste. Every mod i've done on my past bikes have been mods I liked and thought looked/ sounded/ performed good. Good luck with your adventure.

Ride it, and you'll know what you want to change.

Hi Biggs,

I too have a new Iron. The dealer had already installed a 2-up seat when I bought it but I had forward controls and 12" Harley mini-ape bars put on. My next plans are slip on exhaust, air cleaner and those xied thingamajiggers to get more fuel into the mix. That's really all I plan on doing. Imo the little pegs and covers and spiky mirrors are overkill.

Congratulations on your first Motorcycle!!!

While I agree that you should ride it first for awhile, because you will know then what you need to make it more like what you want...

almost assuredly you will want to change either the seat to a spring seat, or change the rear shocks...almost everyone finds the Sportys to be too rough of a ride from the factory.

I would definitely wait for new bars until you were sure on if you are keeping the stock seat and the stock pegs.

I would wait on the air cleaner until you decide on what fuel tuner you are going to use.

If you want louder pipes, then I suggest listening to as many bikes as you can in person...figuring out what pipes you need to get the sound or look you want. Thousands of people have spent money on multiple sets of pipes before they found what they were happy with.

You can also get a pretty good idea of what some pipes sound like on youtube.

But to give you some ideas of what you can do to a Sporty, here are a couple that I have modded...might get you thinking of what you would like while your out riding.

First mod for me was the seat. So glad I did that.

Mod that put the biggest smile on my face immediately was the slipons. Auditory Viagra is what I called it. GF laughed at that one.

Worst mod were the Keystone bars. Took them off almost immediately. But there's no way to really know how you're going to like bars until you ride with them.

I've got too much $ wrapped up in headbolt covers, axle nut covers, passenger pegs, shifter peg, grips, mirrors, gas cap, intake, tuner, sissy bar, highway pegs, air shocks, brake/clutch levers, derby cover, timer cover, etc. It goes on and on. I've made it my own but it comes at a price.
If I had to do it over I'd go with seat, shocks, front springs, slipons, intake, tuner, and a 1250 kit and that's it, in that order.

My advice is to ride it a while, and have a vision. And really, go with comfort first (seat, shocks, bars, etc.).

Cool

Tons of mods on my Softail. Went to a Stage IV with motor, but never again. It's a waste on a Harley to have that much extra power because they're too heavy.

Went stage I on the 72. Mostly for the sound. Modern Harleys are simply too quiet in stock condition!

Congrats on your new ride and welcome to the forum.

As others have said, ride for a while. Fit the bike to your size for comfort and safety i.e. seat, shocks, fork springs, etc. I had to lower my bike to be able to plant my feet on the ground. If you find that you want more sound/performance, then exhaust, air cleaner, fuel management....contact DK Customs. Their customer service is awesome and they are so responsive and willing to help.
And if you still have expendable funds, go for the look.
Get a manual....and have fun with your mods.
