Is there anyway that I could bring the forward controls on a 2001 XL1200C Sportster back more? It comes stock with forward controls (i believe), so can't just go to stock ones. The reason is because I'm only about 5'6" and its a little stretch to the pedals, especially the shifter. If there are no kits to do this, I can change the angle of the shifter pedal to be more upright, correct?
i believe you can convert to mid controls..see if you can find someone on the forum willing to trade you for yours..im sure someone is thinking about converting to forward controls around here..
I have a set of mid controls that I would be willing to trade for forward controls. They are off a 2005 sportster low. I'm not sure if they will fit so you'd have to check first.
Options:
- A 'reach' seat will bring you forward some.
- Changing to mid-controls
- Offset peg mounts. The peg mounts (might) make a difference by bringing the pegs back toward you an inch or so. Two potential downsides: First, it'll probably not look to snazzy. More important, it'll do nothing for the shifter and brake.
Yes to your question: The no-cost option is to adjust the linkage on the shift lever to better accomodate your reach. I'd suggest you try that first and go from there. That might be all you need.
I'm about 5'4" and know of your problem. First, you can adjust the shift lever a little bit closer to you to make it easier to reach. The next best option is to get the Harley Reach seat (or something similar). The seat helped me so much I can't describe it. I also lowered mine front and rear with Progressive suspension and I just installed a pullback handlebar.

i dont think they will work on his 2001..i believe they changed them in 2004..
Hello all...newbie here...
I am switching to forward controls, but only the brake. I have a XL1200 Low, and I am 5'6". I lost my leg below the right knee a few years back and I have a prosthetic leg. I can't bend the right knee and leg far enough with mid controls to apply the rear brake. But I don't think I will be able to reach the shift lever with forward controls, so I am keeping mids on that side.
So, tell me, do you think this will look weird or funny ? And will it be uncomfortable on longer rides ?
Also, I will probably be offering the left side shift lever forward controls for sale here on the forum and on E Bay.
Niskyne,
I have a set of mid controls from my '00sporty just sitting ina box of spare parts. I could let go of them in you want to go that route.
Zendog,
You could puta highway peg up front on theshifter side. I think I may have a spare set of these as well sitting in the same box as my mid controls.
