Default Gear Brake testing

Having installed a Gear Brake gearbrake.com "smart brake light module (universal model $70) I needed to test it. The sensitivity is adjustable.

Problem: Can't see the brake light while riding

Solution: temporarily add a test light up front

Unused LED marker light taped into E-Z Pass bracket

Gear Brake black box velcroed to fender under saddlebag yoke (above red reflector)

Wiring with 2 extra taps for test light (those get removed)

The unit works great! For example, cruising at 30 MPH in 3rd. Drop throttle and 3/4 second later the brake light flashes, then stays on for a while.

Wow seems like a lot of trouble rather than just drop your right foot 1/4 of an inch to activate the brake light but if it keeps you from being rear ended I guess it's worth it.

Yeah, like all riders flash their brakes 100% of the time when they decelerate. Without fail. Ever.

It also works as a 2 pulse flasher whenever the light goes on.

Am I understanding this correctly? The brake light comes on every time you release the throttle? If so that's just silly.

Probably not a bad idea if you do lots of freeway commuting. Does it just work at higher speeds, or every time you suddenly release throttle?

A little extra warning to the idiot behind you couldn't hurt considering all the texting and talking going on.

When, for whatever reason, the unit senses deceleration exceeding the threshold you set it flashes the brake light twice & holds the light on for a 'while'. I don't know how it determines when to go dark.

IMO they train drivers that you're just decelerating a bit, and not coming to a stop. Not good for when the idiot behind you pays no attention and you need to get on the brakes hard and come to a complete stop, and they think you're just coasting. Before you know it you've got a mini van wrapped around your rear tire.

I wouldn't want it. I can tap my breaks any time I need to. A driver behind you will just think you are riding your breaks after a while and will not pay attention when you really do stop.

I too used this unit for a while. Worked really well, especially in the twisties, when you shouldn't be "tapping" your brakes during turns. You can adjust sensitivity to match the decelerations, when you roll off the throttle. I engine brake all the time and I found it cool to be able to not have to tap my brakes before or after. Cars actually did increase distance behind me. It was noticable. I did, however, return the unit beacuse I could not find a flat surface to permanently install on my sporty. I had too much "stuff" under my seat already.
