Hoping someone here can help me out. Long story short, turns out that whoever put the K&N air filter on completely over saturated the filter in oil and when I ride it leaks out all over my bike. Is there a way to clean all the extra oil out besides taking it off and doing a whirly bird over my head with it? I didn't even know these filters needed oil. I've used regular paper ones in everything else I have owned. I'm just tired of cleaning it off my bike all the time. Luckily it hasn't gotten all over my clothes yet.
You need to use filter cleaner then re oil the filter.K&N sells a kit for this.
Bad news is they probably didn't over oil the filter, do a search on blow by or oil from the filter to get the education.
It happens on a lot of Sportsters.
K&N oil is red, is the oil your talking about red? if not check your oil level, should be about halfway down to the add mark, if its right full try removing some with a turkey baster, it seems to help not running it right up at the full mark.
Unlike a paper air filter, the K&N is made out of cotton, it requires oil. You can get the cleaning and oil kit for about $10. I would also check the oil color, like other said, it could be blowby oil.
Good to know about the blow by. The oil is definately not red. Looks more like engine oil but cleaner, almost clear. (Maybe it's synthetic) My buddy suggested the filter oil, but he's into cars not bikes. That's why I came here before I did anything. I didn't even know engine oil could come out by the carb. I always check my oil and since I got the bike in January it's been at the same level about halfway between both lines. I'll do the search recommended for some solutions. Thanks alot.
are you sure its filter oil? just either get a k&n recharger kit or some dishwashing liquid. mix a spray and soak the filter real good. let it sit for awhile drink a beer. lather, rinse, and repeat until happy. blow dry on cool , re oil and go. still might not be filter oil though. my sporty pukes into the a/c
