Default Red Light On Speedometer/Tach Combo

Anyone know what the small red light on the HD Speedo/Tach combo means when it comes on?

I've had my new gauge combo on my 2013 1200C for about 1 month. And yes on key on all lights come on to show that they are working. Then engine icon goes out and I start bike. Red light goes out way before that.

Yesterday on ride home, normal route, not even very hot and sitting in a little traffic but drifting in N down hill as the intersection gave way - I glance down at my gauge and see the red light on. Engine is at 1000 rpms or slightly under as usual and N is light up since I'm in neutral. I double look and its still on as I sit in the traffic for about 2 mins drifting to approach teh intersection. My turn at intersection and I go in 1st and light goes out as I throttle up for the pull out. AND it never comes on again in the 19 mile ride home.

Never seen this red light on before except at key on before start up as it checks and powers up at key on.

I cover bike last night and grab my owners manual and see nothing about it. Since I changed my gauge I grab the HD manual for the gauge and it says nothing about this red light or else.

This morning I uncover bike and fire it up and let it warm up as I usually do. Light is on with first key on and goes out like it always does and it is out the whole way to work. Before I set out I double check my running lights; turn signals; brake light; high/low beam and all work. Nothing is burnt out...

Any hints?

I'm gonna hook up my PV on the way home today as I ride home from work and run some of it's gauges to see voltage and some other things during the ride -just to see if I see something not right.

BTW, bike rode home fine yesterday as well. If I'da never looked down and saw the red light on I would have never even known since nothing felt strange.

Check engine icon is not on except for key on and it goes out. So I don't expect to see a code. I know PV will let me see and clear codes. I just need to find out how to check these thru the PV.

THANKS for any input.

On my 08 1200C stock speedo. That red light is my security fob key light. If you have the security fob from HD your bike shouldn't start if that light doesn't go out. Sounds like the battery in your fob is about dead, that's if you have security on your bike.

I have no FOB. Just 2 metal HD keys. Not sure my 1200C has a security system. My OEM gauge had the RED KEY icon that sort of acted like the red light on my HD combo gauge. BUT they just came on at key on then go out.

Hmmmm...

THANK YOU!

Sometimes on this particular grade/downhill 4 way I put in N and just drift and stop / repeat as we all go thru this rural area. So I've been in N before many many times on this route with the bike. IF traffic is moving ok I'll just clutch it etc.

Just strange as I've never seen this red light on before. To me I'd think the red light is the same as the red key that was on the OEM speedo. ONLY due to the fact that the new combo has not KEY icon.

Either way I really don't find much info on IF the red light comes on in my silly owners manual.

I just ordered the service manual today from my local HD shop. Talked to the guy I deal with all the time, nice guy, and he didn't have any idea about why it came on. He said its sort of a no frills bike so he doubted that the red indicator meant anything.

I don't know... I'll have to fish more. I plan to us the PV today and look at DTC info to see if any code is tripped.

THANKS!

this may be a dumb question, but is it consistent and does it coincide with your fuel pump priming right before you start it? I have a check engine light that always comes on when I turn the key; wait for it to go off, then start it up. I relate it to being like the primer light on a diesel truck.

Default Red security light

No security, no FOB, just keys.

Same thing happened to me last year. Coming out of the mountains got stuck in traffic due to an accident. After about 15 minutes the light came on. I shut the engine off and coasted until we cleared the bottleneck. When I powered back up the light was still lit but went off after about a quarter mile.

Never really got a clear answer but I know the bike was HOT and I should have shut down earlier. I've posted about this and a few other people had the same thing happen when their bikes got hot.

Hmmm...that's interesting. Funny that I've been in much hotter weather on this same road on way home and I've never seen this light on.

So over the past few days I've run to work and home with my PV hooked up. Looking at gauges of air intake temp; engine temp; head temp and the temps are pretty low. Nothing to be concerned about at all.

I did look for codes and 1 code was in history. It was neutral switch to ground. So I cleared it and will watch for it. I never checked the codes before so I can't really tell when it was tripped. I've only had my PV for about 2.5 months and I should read and cleared them once I did my first flashed MAP from FM.

Either way I'm still riding like I have with going to N when in a drift down hill traffic situation. Sort of like duck walking. Again this is not dead in the center of summer in 90+ degree F heat or worse.

I'll be watching and keeping an eye out.

THANKS for the inputs/reads too!

AND - as of now I've not seen this light back on - except at KEY ON before the start up as it always has while the system runs its checks.

@kguittar12 thanks...no its not consistent. Only seen this light one once since I've owned the bike. And by once I mean during a ride at any time. Yes it does come on at KEY ON as system boots up then it goes out. Usually its out before the yellow engine icon goes out during the system boot up. This is after the fuel pump cycles too. Been this way forever. I've been watching on the PV the voltages and they are normal and don't deviate at idle in traffic or during RPMS while riding either. THANK YOU!

Had a fan assisted JEGG oil cooler and set of Love Juggs mini fans installed with the 10000 mile service, and this red light next to the "engine" light lit up. It was cleared but continues to light up occasionally. Have no idea what this light represents or why it's lighting up spontaneously. This started after a bunch of work listed above was done. Prior to this it never lit up. 2012 Dyna Custom.
