I usually ride first thing in the morning with the temp high 40's to mid 50's. 2005 883 with Stage 1. I'm finding that when I give it throttle off the line (with the enrichner full out or even half out - and even sometimes full in) the engine bogs and carb farts. A few times when starting out it even bucked like it was stalling.
I'm trying to figure out if it's running too rich or too lean, and if I'm backing the enrichner in too soon (I might have a habit of getting rid of the enrichner too soon in fear of fowling the plugs)
It runs fine when completely warmed up.
So, when cold - - - too rich? too lean? too little enrichner? dirty plugs?
i always had to keep my choke out halfway for the first mile of riding when its cold out. Then i push it all the way in, then no carb farts. If i dont, same as you ill cough a few times and it will bog when giving it full throttle. I think thats the same as alot of people here.
on my 1200c, no mods. i start with full choke for about 3-4 min then push choke in until a seady lower idle is acheived and then just drive easy until its warm,( no jammin' thats what it dosn't like) i also don't rev at stop lights just let it idle. takes mine about 10-15 min to warm. hope this helps.
here's something i heard from an old harley guy thati found works for me. i use the enrichener to start the engine. i give it about 10 seconds then revthe motora couple of times. close the enrichener and use your hand to keep it running. just enough fuel to keep it running smooth. it will smooth out as usual as it warms up. as soon as the rear rocker cover is warm igo. i have never had any issue with fouled plugs or any of that stuff. it seems to be quicker too
Sounds like you're not letting the bike get warmed up. I do the same thing. I hate running the choke, I've just gotten used to knowing the bike will do that, and adjust accordingly. I don't think I'm hurting anything that way. I tend to use the throttle to warm up more than the choke, after the bike gets running.
And of course everything depends on the temps. In really cold weather, I leave the choke out for a couple of miles, but not in normal conditions.
I start it with the choke.Let it run 30 seconds or so.Then use the throttle to keep it running.I was told to do so by the tech at the dealer. The manual says run the choke 3-5 minutes while riding.I was told if you do it that way it can foul the plugs. The way I do it I have never had a problem with the plugs. It still farts when I take off for the first time. But not much at all.I have stage 1 done to it.
