Default Autozone Brand Gear Oil?

Anyone try it? It's half the price of Mobil 1. Valvoline is between the two. All meet GL-5 specs supposedly. What could be different?

Sorry, typo in the title. Autozone.

Why are you using gear oil? In a sporty?

You put 20-50 in the engine/ oil bag and 20-50 in the primary or equivalent.. IE: sport trans, or HD - synth

Or atf type f or b&m trick shift.

I've always used gear oil in my transmission, 75W-90. I use 20W-50 oil for my engine. Gear oil is made for a transmission vs engine oil, it's made to better withstand the characteristics that fluid experiences. Note 20W-50 and 75W-90 are about the same viscosity.

I went with Mobil 1 since I've used that in the past and had no issues, plus I don't quite trust an Autozone brand fluid.

Here is Red Lines official response -

Thank you for contacting Red Line Oil, in the shared Sportster primary/transmission the 75W90 is recommended, a product that has been used extensively and performs well.

The 75W90 is the product we have have used for a number of years with very good results in Sportster/Buell transmissions, matching the viscosity and type fluid called for.
The 80W Motorcycle Gear Oil is a lower viscosity than called for, the ShockProof gear oils can due to their unique characteristics could cause sticking of the Harley clutches.
The 75W90 would be preferred and recommended over 80W Motorcycle Gear Oil in these applications.

There can be issues with some GL-5 gear oils in certain applications. Some can be corrosive to brass, bronze or copper, not an issue with our GL-5 gear oils, they don’t cause corrosion, pitting or metal removal. In a synchro equipped transmission the friction modifiers contained in many gear oils can make them too slippery, though not the case in a motorcycle transmission with dog rings.

So if you want the right viscosity and dont want to worry about it damaging anything, go with Redline http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=133&pcid=4

To each his own, but I really don't think I've come across anyone experiencing problems using 75W-90, in fact, most people that comment about going from 20W-50 to 75W-90 love it and never look back.

While Harley says it's OK to use 20w-50 motor oil in the Sporty primary/tranny, Harley currently recommends their Sport-Trans oil for this application. Sport-Trans is an ~80 weight GEAR OIL.

Yes ,my bad. Harley discontinued the Sport-Trans several years ago. While it was MIA, Harley started recommending 20w-50 Mortor Oil for the primary/tranny. A couple of years later, they introduced Formula + as the replacement for Sport-Trans fluid and again changed the RECOMMENDED fluid to Formula+ Gear Oil.

BTW, the advantage of using Gear Oil in the primary/tranny is its resistance to molecular shearing, which does occur with both straight and helical cut gears.

I use Red Line 75W90 gear oil and am having great results with it. My clutch has a much more positive hook up. I plan to use this as long as I have my Sportster.

And I believe formula + is a gear oil.
