let me say that i have only had my sporty for going on 3 months. i put off getting a motorcycle for a year even though all my friends already had one. now im hooked! in the time ive had the bike i have put 2400 miles on it already. i am trying to learn as much as i can about my bike to help save me money on maintenance. so i have ordered a service manual. i have also recently bought some v&h slip ons that im going to attempt to install myself today after work.
i keep reading in this forum and i see people talking about a stage 1. can someone help me out with this? like i said im wanting to learn ...so i guess im asking a question most people already know the answer to.
Stage 1 commonly refers to changing to free flowing slip ons, air cleaner and re-jetting the carb or if fuel injected getting the ECM download. By the way, you'll be fine just changing the pipes but if you change the air cleaner you have to rejet or if FI you'll need the download since you'll be getting more air flow and have to compensate with more fuel.
I ditto what's been said above, but the REASON folks do a "Stage 1" is to allow the engine to breathe better than it does when it comes from the factory. H-D has to meet EPA standards and that means turning out a lean running engine. By opening the intake and adding free-flow exhaust, a larger volume ofair is allowed to run through the engine, and as a result the jets in the carb need to be larger (or an ECM download if EFI) to allowmore fuelto mix with the increased volume of air low. The end result of a "Stage 1" conversion is more HP and more torque than a stock bike.
If you only put the slip-ons on the bike it will sound better but the performance won't change much.If you want to get the performance you will need to complete the "stage 1" by doing the air intake and the re-jet/download.It will make a BIG difference if you do all 3 phases. Then you will have a "TRUE" stage 1 upgrade
I did the stage 1 upgrade on my 1200N and I am very happy. I did the SE a/c, Ecm, and the SE street legal perf slip ons slash outs. Runs great, and sounds even better. Good luck, and these guys explain it very well.
For all three componants it cost me $750 at the dealer, then subtract the 10% for my discount. The A/C was like $140.00, the slip ons SE were 299.00, and the ECM download I think was anothe $129 then add labor... I have heard guys say under $1000, but mine was $750. on an '07 EFI 1200N
